INstead of paying for AP I would make an infopass appointment and request an I-551 stamp.

Once you have the GC, you do not need the EAD or AP anymore. If the GC does not come by the time the EAD or AP expire, you will need to apply for renewals. But, in most cases, the GC arrives before they both expire.

We were planning to go to England next month and so just paid the money to do the AP - since it has taken this long to get it we will be going now in September instead. It wasn't that much, I didn't mind paying for it.

We are going to Rome next April - hope the GC comes by then so we don't have to worry about renewals!
