I'm glad I found this thread, I filed in June 2016 and got the extension letter but will be leaving the country in September (when my GC expires) and I was just wondering what I need to do if the GC hasn't arrived by then!

Apologies, I didn't have time to read the entire thread, but I am assuming from reference to INfopass appointments that if I don't have my 10 year GC in July/August, I should probably go see USCIS and ask what's up?

Thanks in advance.

OH and by the way, I have traveled outside the US on my extension letter twice - first to Australia for Christmas, then to NZ in April. I'm about to do it again to go to China. I never had any issues with the extension letter, other than one of the airlines (AirNZ) hadn't seen one before (I was in a small rural airport, not the international one, but checking in for the international flight) and had to ask her supervisor if it was acceptable form of proof of residency.

Just a heads up that I traveled outside of the country and came back yesterday with my GC and extension letter (NOA1 date is June, 10). No questions asked, and CBP just stamped my passport with the ARC annotation.

I know we had all been wondering what date the extension letter extends (NOA date or GC expiration date), I figured I would use the opportunity ask the CBP guy what was the cut-off date they use for their admission (1 year after NOA date or GC date), the CBP guy said it was the last date on the GC. This is important to note as CBP is the agency that admits you and not USCIS - So what USCIS says doesn't really matter when it comes to admitting folks into the country.

I guess this settles it. I personally wouldn't bother with a stamp in my passport any longer as my GC expiration date was 09/05/2016 so my letter extends it till 09/05/2017. I will only go for a stamp if the GC doesn't arrive before 09/05/2017 and I need to travel.

Just to confirm again, if anyone happens to travel outside of the country, ask CBP the same question as well and let us know what they say.

Thanks for the info. In my previous post here, I also mentioned I asked CBP offiercers for many times when I came back from my business trips ( which I have taken more than 20 times out of US with my expired GC and extension letter), they confirmed one year extension to the GC expiration date every time. Not sure why people still keep asking this question.

Thank you!

I wonder same as well.

This may be a stretch but I will be surprised if CBP actually turns someone out if they come in with an expired extension letter. I assume in such a case, you will be taken to secondary and asked a bunch of questions, calls made etc. to verify your status. It's not like CBP will haul your behind into a plane and deport you. Key point is : Your LPR status is valid UNTIL your case is adjudicated.

I think everyone needs to relax.

I have just returned from my InfoPass appointment at the local USCIS office. My green card expired on 6/17/16 and my NOA for I-751 was dated 6/9/16. I scheduled my appointment online 2 weeks in advance without any problem.

The officer asked why do I need the stamp and I said that I need it in order to extend my driver's license and prove my work authorization. I had my passport stamped with the stamp extending the conditional residency for another year and work authorization extended till Jan 10, 2018 (the officer could not explain why those dates are different, he just said that this is unfortunate, but that is they way they do it). My NOA and my expired GC were handed back to me, as I recall many people mentioned that their card and the NOA letter were kept by USCIS after the passport was stamped. The appointment took around 15 minutes in and out. No new details about the case, it was not yet assigned to an officer. Waiting continues...

Mmm, that is strange, I talked to the USCIS agent and she told me the extension starts from the NOA date.

Why do you say that about the Vermont office? It depends on where you are located but even then they could have moved you to another office. They typically notify you if they move your case to another office.

my gf is June and she has been waiting. She called early January and they gave her a "broad stroke" timetable like 6-8 months"

I said so because Vermont processing times on the website is showing 'processing applications from Feb 2016' :(

Well, you have to understand that USCIS does not admit you into the country when you travel international, CBP does.

Besides other minor reasons for getting the stamp, the primary reason anyone even bothers to get the stamp is so they can re-enter the country after they travel abroad. In this regard, I will pay attention to what CBP says instead of USCIS.

Of course you can go for the stamp way ahead of time but what we're saying is, CBP only looks at it from the last day and month of your GC expiration and not your NOA. I asked the CBP agent this yesterday when I was traveling back to the US and he confirmed it.

A number of people have also called USCIS and they have confirmed it's the GC and not the NOA. Anyone is welcome to do as they please though.

I am not traveling any time soon, so it won't make any difference, I got my NOA on 8/8/2016, so the USCIS on the phone told me to start making an info pass around 7/8 this year, but my conditional green card expired on 10/28 last year, so if I go by CBP, I should make an info pass in late Sept this year which probably makes more sense, I will contact my lawyer and see what she thinks, I have a feeling she will go by the expiration date on my conditional green card, but like I said, I am not traveling, so either way, it won't affect me. Thanks for your info.

@nightingalejules Could you highlight MissSixty's entry? And also, how does one properly format these things? I tried to highlight it myself, but I couldn't figure out how to do it. I've seen other posts comment that you have to adjust your text editor setting to "rich" but I don't see where one does that. Thanks!
