Hi,

Another June filer here - please add my case details:

Service Center - California

Date of I-751 - 06/18/2016

NOA1 Date - 06/22/2016

Biometrics - 07/27/2016

Approved -  Pending....

I have a quick question.  My green card extension expires August 26.  On July 24, I have to travel extensively for work and won't be back until September 4, after the extension letter has expired.  If I try to get an infopass appointment for the I-551 stamp as close to the July 24 departure, with plane tickets and itinerary in hand, to prove travel, and return, will they likely stamp me?  I don't want to have to return from Europe just to do this, but I could if it was a necessity.

Of course, this is assuming my conditions aren't removed before the 1 year extension letter expires.  Just doing a bit of forward planning.

Thanks.

I'm in the same situation that you, and I have my infopass for May 9th. I will let you know my experience once we finished in the infopass. We will travel from the 12th until June 2nd, and the letter expire on June 13th. But keep in mind that with USCIS there is not 2 cases the same never and check how the infopass appointment develop in your residence area, not always you have availability.

I don't think there should be that many April filers from vsc still waiting, there definitely shouldn't be any from CSC that's still waiting. May is moving I'm both departments as well so we are veerrryyy close to the finish line in the roc battle ya'll.

Okay guys, so I know this has already been discussed, but when can we make an InfoPass to get a stamp? Within a month from the date on the extension letter or within a month of the expiry on my GC?

The date on my extension letter is in June, but my GC expiry date is July 16.

It's hard for me to get off work so I want to make sure I go within the correct 30-day window, so I don't show up early and have them say they can't stamp me yet.

Advice appreciated!

The most "hard-nosed" USCIS field offices won't stamp until it's a month before the GC expiry date +1 year. So if it's a P.I.T.A for you to get out there, wait for June 17th or later.

So you think "hard nosed" as in proper Jobs worth employees might see an application for an extension say for example 35 days out and say - "we can't process until its within 1 month, so come back then" - even with good quality documentation that shows a business trip that returns a few days after the GC extension expiry date.

I know I'm asking the impossible - because these people are human and some make decisions sensibly, and others apply the rule to the letter.

Does anyone out there in visajourney land have any experience of a I-551 stamp being given outside 1 month of the GC (including 1 year extension) expiration being given at an infopass appointment?  If so, please share your story.  Thanks.

I've heard that some offices (and, of course, as you say, some individual officers) are more willing to be reasonable than others. Definitely there have been reports of people getting I-551s early, but since @Erica & Lily  are able to wait, and the major hurdle is taking time off work and travelling to the USCIS office, I suggested that they err on the side of caution.

In your case, the best you can do is bring all your evidence and explain the situation and hope for the best. They really should be able to give you the stamp a few days "early" - as if 11 months without being processed can be considered doing ANYTHING early!

I called USCIS today and they told me to make infopass appointment and get stamp after May 20. They told me to wait for 20 more days as I am a June 1 filler.

Confused, your timeline said your 751 has been approved?

Thanks for your feedback. As always I appreciate everyone who replies - we're all in this together and our collective info will make the journey smoother for us all.

I realize my situation is a long way out - several months - but I hope that bringing the issue up early may help myself and others who could be in a similar situation. And with suggestions that approvals could be taking over a year, this could affect other people.

nightingalejules - thank you for your insight - when you say there are reports of early I-551's - do you mean you are aware of people getting stamped outside of 1 month?

I know this is a bore for forum regulars, but for anyone who has knowledge, do you know that the I-551 is only available within 1 month of the expiry of your green card - and by that I mean the date on your green card + 1 year extension given in your NOAA.

Or this is something that government employees are flexible about when you come to an infopass appointment.

Again - thank you all for input - great forum and resource!!!

I can't quote actual people, but I remember reading about both... some people definitely got the stamp before the 1 month window, and some have gotten turned away. I don't know whether some local offices are more lenient than others, or whether it's just individual employees.

One suggestion for you might be to start a new thread labelled "Did anyone get an i-551 stamp from [your local office]?" and see if anyone near you has actually tried. That way you get the benefit of more people than just the ones who read the June thread.

I know, I was freaking out ... but I was finally able to schedule an Infopass. :D

Don't you think that USCIS is going to shoot itself into the foot or already did? They will have even more work when eligible PRs will submit N400s!
