You probably don't need it, but that doesn't mean it's not a good idea to get it. First of all, you may need to travel without much warning, and you wouldn't be able to do so (say, if someone in your family was ill or you win a trip). Secondly, depending on where you live, you may need proof of your legal status to change jobs or get a new Driving License or any number of things you're not anticipating now.

If you suddenly needed proof of your status, you'd then have to make an InfoPass and those are sometimes hard to come by (especially, I'm guessing, right now, when so many people are going to need the I-551 stamp since USCIS is taking so long. 

You don't technically need it, but I still think you ought to make an appointment shortly before the 1 year anniversary of your green card expiration date.

Incorrect. Your status as a Legal Permanent Resident does not change until you are either approved or denied.  If you had not submitted your I-751 you would be out of status, but you did, so you are not out of status.

 

The only thing the stamp does is provide you with proof of your legal status. Which, depending on where you live, you may require, as I said above, for employment, driver's license extensions etc. 

 

As soon as USCIS accepted your I-751, your status is "Conditional Permanent Resident with Removal of Conditions Pending" and that doesn't change until USCIS has made a determination. This is why they feel justified in making us wait so long; because our status as Legal US Persons is not in danger throughout the process.

I received an update from one of my Senators staff today. Seems our case (NOA1 6/13/16) has not yet been assigned to a case officer. They were told that this might take place in the next month. They also suggested that we get the passport stamp in the meantime.

That sucks, but according to a member on here California is going to play catch up in July and rush through applications  It remains to be seen, I guess we can try to be  positive regarding  this revelation and hope that this is indeed true.  Hope you hear shortly Jim.

I asked the same question in another thread since we received our approval letter yesterday also saying it can take up to 60 days and instructing us not to travel before then. a couple of people said they got theirs within 2-3 weeks. but i would imagine that you could still travel with your GC + extension letter

for those who made an appointment and decided ahead of time not to go for one reason or another, i figured out how to cancel it. 
I had read on here that people were calling in to cancel their appointments with no luck. 

IF you were able to print that appointment letter which includes your appointment confirmation number as well as the pin you can log back onto

infopass and click the view your appointment tab and either reschedule or cancel your appointment from that screen.

If you forgot to print that letter or get a photo of it on your phone, you can also print the letter which on the same page with just your name and DOB. 

I wanted to inform anyone who was still trying to do this over the phone of this possible way.

oh and our NOA is 6/10/16 and still waiting:( VSC. we made a few info passes that we couldn't attend. I wish i knew how to cancel them before. 

We have another one on the 5th, I'm very eager to go in and find out what the heck is going on. But as far as I'm concerned, waiting and getting the stamp and than getting approved is better than getting an RFE and the stress of it. we shall see what the deal is next week.

we have the same NOA date. I called yesterday and was only told that my case is sitting with an officer.

 

I think we might be stuck with the same slow officer.

VSC - I got my letter on the 21st (decision date 16th). My status changed to "We mailed you the card" on the 26th. It's the 30th and I have not received it yet.

06/21/2017 - Approval letter dated 06/16/2017 received in the mail

06/22/2017 - Online status changed to "New card is being produced"

06/26/2017 - Online status changed to "We mailed your new card"

06/30/2017 - Card received via Priority Mail
