Hi, I've not posted on here before but I am a June filer (still waiting--I'll check dates later) and have been keeping an eye on this thread for obvious reasons. I just wanted to share my experience with travelling on the extension letter, since some folk seem to be anxious. I travelled to Ireland (via Amsterdam) in March for 12 days, leaving and re-entering US through Minneapolis-St. Paul airport (MSP). The only issue I had during re-entry was that I wasn't able to use the self-service machines, but had to talk to one of the regular border officers. The machine itself stated this when I attempted to use it.

I handed the officer my expired green card and extension letter, and I'm pretty sure he didn't even really look at the letter at all. Just a quick glance. He swiped my card and seemed be satisfied with whatever came up on his computer screen. This leads me to believe that the extension shows in the system itself. I would still carry the letter, obviously, but my impression is that the border officer has access to whatever info they need--including the extension date--once they pull your profile in the system.

You got a nice one!

I traveled three times with my extension letter. Last time got a really picky officer. He read the whole paper and make a face before saying and nonsense "ok" to me. Lol

I don't blame them... huge responsibility!

I don't know what to do. I cannot get to my local USCIS, there were no available appointments, now they are closed for a week because they are relocating. I set up alarms for 6am to check availability. Nothing! I'm gonna be traveling in a middle of May, coming back end of May. My letter is good until June 7th. Will they let me into the country? Do I need this stamp? Can I get a second extension letter from the main USCIS office if I call? Everything is on the edge of a knife. I'm stressed and bummed that it's taking that long to approve my GC. :(((

I hope that everyone's comments make you feel less anxious about your travel. I agree that you should be fine since you're planning to return before your extension expires. If you're still nervous, I've heard of people finding appointments at other nearby USCIS offices... I don't know where you  live, but are there any other nearby cities that have USCIS offices that you could check for appointments? It would, of course, be a much bigger nuisance, because you'd be travelling further and possibly missing work and all that. But if you're really losing sleep over it, the extra time and travel might be worth it to get the stamp (and the peace of mind).

Is your timeline updated?

UPDATE:

Everyone remember I posted a comment about missing a call from USCIS?

So finally the same number called me AGAIN (on a Saturday morning) and this time I was able to talk to the agent.

He asked me the regular questions to confirm my identity and told me he was following up on my call back.

Just so you know, I have never called USCIS and neither have I initiated a call back request.

So I presume the last agent that called me probably put an annotation on my file to have someone call me.

He didn't really say much only to tell me my case was processing and they have a huge processing backlog due to the volume of filings (No mention of case transfers).

He said they were now tracking between 1 yr - 1.5 years and that I should expect a decision between now and December 2018! (surprise..surprise)

I asked him about traveling outside of the US with an almost expiring extension letter and I will quote his words :

'You want to make sure everything is correct if you are travelling outside of the country. If your extension letter is almost expiring and you need to travel, go to the ASC office and get a stamp in your passport. CBP is different from USCIS and they are not always on the same page as USCIS. So make sure you have enough time between the expiry date and your return date."

He told me they had about 25 applicants who were stuck outside the country due to either traveling without an AP (for AOS applicants) or missing i751 extension letters.  He then proceeded to tell me a story about this US citizen guy who married this girl 20 years her junior and after their wedding, they booked a trip to an island for their honeymoon and now she's stuck and can't come back.

The whole call didn't really make sense. He didn't go into specifics about my case and just gave me a bunch of random information. Mostly what I already knew.

More confused than I was before the call.

I also want to chime in about the extension letter. We just got back yesterday from being out of the country with the letter and had no issues. Third time using it. Every time its been a different experience but ultimately we had no issues.

Thank you MaleAlpha for updating us.

Could I ask you what was the area code or the phone Number you got the call from? I personally never answer the call from outside number, so was just wondering if I should be prepared for these kind of calls. And one more question, are you USC or applicant?

Btw, I'm a NOV 16 filer so the road seems very far for me but not the hope.

But the way USCIS is slowing down especially CSC, it does make sense to wait for 1-1.5 year.

I am the applicant.

USCIS called from the # (213) 334-3502 on both occasions. A check online reveals (213) is an LA area code.

Most likely they may not call you but it's good to know that a call from this # will be from USCIS so you don't ignore it.

I didn't even know USCIS makes these random phone calls for no reason.

We'll we are coming up in another 30 days at 1 year now.  Seems as if most of us are experiencing the same delays. We've called several times and seems nothing changes; even after waiting a month between calls.  Has anyone else seen "any" movement on us June 2016 Filers?  We'll need to get a info pass appointment to get the stamp.  I've never seen nor heard of the I-751 taking so much time to process.

I might go for I-551 stamp in passport by last week of May 2017, If I don't hear about my approval from CSC till then. In general, I understand I need to have appointment notice, passport, expired GC, extension letter & proof of upcoming travel (just to be safe). Are we allowed to take cell phones inside?  My local office is at SFO (444 Washington street, SFO, CA 94111).  Is there anyone here who have first-hand information of getting passport stamp at this office?

We'll we are coming up in another 30 days at 1 year now.  Seems as if most of us are experiencing the same delays. We've called several times and seems nothing changes; even after waiting a month between calls.  Has anyone else seen "any" movement on us June 2016 Filers?  We'll need to get a info pass appointment to get the stamp.  I've never seen nor heard of the I-751 taking so much time to process.

I also follow the Trackitt removing conditions thread. There is an applicant from the Philippines, her receipt is Aug 16/2016 (CSC). They had an interview on Jan the 25th (San Francisco office), and were approved on April 17th.

By the way: 9 out of 10 approvals that are being reported on the thread are from VSC
