The neglectful mother of a small child has been shot at an American zoo.

zoo-shootings-small.jpg

Tina Regal, 38, wasn’t paying attention to her child which subsequently wound up in the gorilla enclosure.

“So we shot her in the leg almost immediately,” confirmed zookeeper, Simon Williams. “Not in the head, obviously, we’re not monsters.

“But we needed to make sure the child wasn’t brought to any kind of unnecessary harm, and a quick bullet to the thigh does seem to

set most parents straight.” Regal said, “I wasn’t expecting to get shot in the leg, but then life is full of surprises.”

“I had left little Billy alone only for an hour or so whilst I went to go and do something more interesting. I didn’t realise that was wrong and

I assumed the zookeepers would do their job and babysit him.

If your child falls into the enclosure, what will you choose?

Risk your child to die or shoot the ape?

You don't just "fall" into an enclosure, and the gorilla seemed to have no interest in hurting the child.

Parents should be charged not only with child neglect but also be held accountable for everything that took place. Whether it be through animal cruelty, or just ordered to pay the zoo the monetary worth of the gorilla, they should be charged and held responsible for what happened, as well as those who made the decision to shoot the gorilla should not keep their job.

Some 15-20 years ago I think it was.. a kid fell into a gorilla enclosure at a zoo. The gorilla actually did an excellent and instinctual job of taking care of the child that was injured. The best part is it had a great outcome. To ensure that in the event someone did fall into the pen, they trained the gorillas to bring ''doll objects'' etc to them gently. This gorilla simply walked over to the keepers and put it safely down.

I see no reason why this gorilla had to die. The keepers were tremendously slow on response time, and as long as they took to ''do something'' about it, other methods could have been employed. Yes gorillas are wild, curious, and very dangerous animals, and yes there was significant risk to the child, and it very likely could have died if the gorilla had been angry, spooked, or simply thought the child was a toy.

The ability for a small child to easily slip into this pen means there was severe lack of security at this zoo. But beyond that, though I know she won't be charged the mother should be held responsible for child endangerment/recklessness, and there should be consequences in repaying damages for the loss of the animal.

There should definitely be criminal charges against the parents. This gorilla did not deserve to die and it is mainly on them. Could shooting him with a tranquilizer freaked him out and caused him to potentially harm the child? Sure, but I'd rather take that chance than just kill an animal because of stupid parents.

I agree the parent(s) should be charged. I trust the zoo staff involved made the right decision. Usually when incidents like this happens, the animal gets the short straw. Knowing how the gorilla reacts to tranquilizers and the time involved, the risk to the child was too great. As much grief as the zoo staff is getting, I can only imagine what it would be if they tried to save the gorilla and the child died.

I would say in cases where it's an adult screwing around and falls in though, save the gorilla first.

Some adults deliberately jumped into the animal enclosure.

This zoo should just let the man died instead! :ranting:
