So everything went well...

My fiance and I arrived at LAX, spent about 5 mins for them to get her finger prints while the officer ask me some basic question then let us go. He kept the package and gave back her passport, is that the only thing she allow to have back ?

Today a week later I took her to our local Social Security office to apply but the lady told me to get the employment authorization form USCIS first before they can get here SSN, even though I hand her the I-765 she still refuse to apply for her and told me to contact USCIS first. (Because when she ask me the reason for applying, I said for work she said I must change the status with USCIS first)

I plan to go back tommorow hopefully see another person.

So all the paperwork she need will be:

1. Social security application form

2. I-765

3. Print out of most recent I-94

4. Passport For ID verification

?

Thats all you need but you dont say for work you will need the EAD before you can work. We werent asked why when I took my fiance to get his but if they did I was going to say so he can go get his drivers license..for the enhanced ID they require the SSN

This is all we needed. We waited til we got married since we did name change. but that was all w/in a week.

I would get married first if you are doing a name change.

Since this is SS and not the DMV this should be federal and not state and not subject to change wherever you live....

We have a SSN /card that says not valid w/o DHS authorization for work....Theres countless threads on this and links to the direct documentation from the SSA on this I believe.

Getting a SSN has all kinds of needs aside from working.

The doctor will want it.

Health insurance will want it

Company benefits will want it.

add as a beneficiary will want it

CC / banks will want it.....etc

Filed: K-1 Visa Country: Vietnam
Timeline

My fiancé applied for SSN in San Jose, CA and it was really simple. The wait to get a representative took a while, but once we sat down with a rep, it was done in 10 minutes. We brought with us her VN passport, printed I-94 from the USCIS site. Google print I-94 if you don't have it. They didn't ask us about working so I don't know if that makes a difference. We received SSN in the mail about 2 weeks later. It's kind of like going to the DMV.

Thanks all,

I was honest, because she eventually want to work so that what I said.

So get the non working SSN first for other purposes (Driver license, bank account, health insurrance ...)

then file out I-765 for employment authorization ? (anyone know how long it take to get the authorization?)

You need an EAD to work. Not a SSN.

Also, the SSN may not be enough for a drivers license. Check your local DMV office for requirements.

For her to start working you need to get married, file AOS plus EAD/AP. EAD should take about 3 months.

You can get a SSN without an EAD, but you cannot work without one.

In Florida, you will need an EAD and a SSN to apply for a driver's license/learner permit.

Also, print a copy of the doc below and bring it with you on your next trip back to the SSA. Not all the clerks know the rules.
