You already submitted the DS-160? I'd have waited until they contacted me to do that, personally. My fiance did the application but waited until we got the embassy email to pay and submit so it doesn't seem like it comes in from out of the blue. I don't think it would cause a problem, just a little odd.

Are you going by an old checklist that folks email around or something? If so, check the date of it and make sure it's not too old. It is definately helpful that folks share these and can help you get ahead of the game, but they can complicate the issue if you're not careful-- the one that was sent to me was 3+ years out of date and came along with tips and tricks from people years back and with different visas (with different requirements) so I definitely wanted to be sure to wait for the checklist from the embassy itself.

Example: translations are not necessary for this step of the K1 process through San Jose (but the instructions passed to me said that it was-- so that was either an old requirement or one for IR1/CR1 visas). No harm no foul in this situation (if they're easy enough to get and you're waiting anyway, no big deal. For us it would have meant several extra days in San Jose while there were a million other things going on at home and we just couldn't do it, but luckily I knew we didn't need to because I was going from the updated checklist). Either way-- you do need them translated for AOS so it's good that you got them done now. Just make sure you get extra copies of the translations, or make sure you hang onto them after the interview or you'll have to do it again in the US.

Yupp the instructions i got are fairly new like a few weeks new. Hmm these new instructions say they have to be translated? i'm going to do it anyways just to be sure. finance is dropping them off tomorrow and picking up thursday. Yup i am going to get extra copies of everything for AOS.

I was told it was okay to do ds-160 when i found out my case was on its way to embassy. i even called embassy to ask and they said to start ds-160.

Ak ok on DS-160. We didn't ask about that, didn't really care. I knew that you can do it early but I didn't want to submit until they'd contacted us, just in case it could cause confusion. It probably couldn't but that's just my thought process. It was all set and ready to go, just had to press send and submit payment. No big deal.

Do your embassy instructions say *to* translate? Ours definitely did not, and that claim came from other VJ users. There is absolutely no harm in doing them now, in fact it's a good idea so you don't have to bother for AOS. But the thing you need them for is AOS not embassy stage-- so hold on to them. We didn't do them (even though we'd planned to) as a matter of sheer logistics. The translator we'd been referred to takes 3 days and of *course* all of this was happening during the month that his landlord/roommate was on vacation in Europe so he was house and pet sitting for the guy (3 cats 2 dogs) and then the backup plan (the guy's cousin or something) flaked out and so he really could *not* spend that much time in San Jose (he's from Perez Zeledon) and then there was an actual emergency in which the puppy was stolen by the neighbor and then sold to some realllly shady characters. That whole week was a mess and a nightmare.

We could have had them done in his city, but at that point we *knew* they weren't needed (called to confirm) and so just did them here for AOS. One of my good friends is fluent in both languages and so "counts" as a translator for USCIS.

Same thing with apostilles and whatever they do at Casa Amarilla (I think that's apostille). Not needed for any part of this (unless his documents are from a country that is not Costa Rica or the US). Again, no harm in doing it if it puts your mind at ease or something, but that is extra time (and money) added to the process.

Marriage/ AOS Timeline:

23 Dec 2015: Legal marriage

23 Jan 2016: Wedding!

23 Jan 2016: "Blizzard of the Century", wedding canceled/rescheduled (thank goodness we were legally married first or we'd have had a big problem!) :sleepy:

24 Jan 2016: Small "civil ceremony" with friends and family who were snowed in with us. December was a bit of a secret and people had traveled internationally and knew we *had* to get married that weekend, and our December legal marriage was nothing but signing a piece of paper at our priest's kitchen table, without any sort of vows etc so this was actually a very special (if not legally significant) day. (L)

16 Apr 2016: Filed for AOS and EAD/AP (We delayed a bit-- no big rush, enjoying the USCIS break)

23 Apr 2016: Wedding! Finally! :luv:

27 Apr 2016: Electronic NOA1 for all 3 :dancing:
29 Apr 2016: NOA1 Hardcopy for all 3
29 Jul 2016: Online service request for late EAD (Day 104)
29 Jul 2016: EAD/AP Approved ~3 hours after online service request
04 Aug 2016: RFE for Green Card (requested medicals/ vaccination record. They already have it). :ranting:
05 Aug 2016: EAD/AP Combo Card arrived! (Day 111)
08 Aug 2016: Congressional constituent request to get guidance on the RFE. Hoping they see they have the form and approve!

K-1 Visa Timeline:

PLEASE NOTE. This timeline was during the period of time when TSC was working on I-129fs and had a huge backlog. The average processing time was 210+ days. This is in no way predictive of your own timeline if you filed during or after April 2015, unless CSC develops a backlog. A backlog is anything above the 5-month goal time listed on USCIS's site

14 Feb 2015: Mailed I-129f to Dallas Lockbox. (L) (Most expensive Valentine's card I've ever sent!)

17 Feb 2015: NOA1 "Received Date"
19 Feb 2015: NOA1 Notice Date
08 Aug 2015: NOA2 email! :luv: (173 days from NOA1)

17 Aug 2015: Sent to NVC

?? Aug 2015: Arrived at NVC

25 Aug 2015: NVC Case # Assigned

31 Aug 2015: Left NVC for Consulate in San Jose

09 Sep 2015: Consulate received :dancing: (32 days from NOA2)

11 Sep 2015: Packet 3 emailed from embassy to me, the petitioner (34 days from NOA2).

18 Sep 2015: Medicals complete

21 Sep 2015: Packet 3 complete, my boss puts a temporary moratorium on all time off due to work emergency :clock:

02 Oct 2015: Work emergency clears up, interview scheduled (soonest available was 5 business days away--Columbus Day was in there)

13 Oct 2015: Interview

13 Oct 2015: VISA APPROVED  (236 days from NOA1)

19 Oct 2015: Visa-in-hand

24 Oct 2015: POE !

15 Dec 2015: Fiance's mother's B-2 visa interview: APPROVED! So happy she will be at the wedding!
