Hi all,

My sister from Ireland will be moving to Australia in 2018,but before that she'd like to work/live in the states for a year.

She just this month completed her degree in Hospitality in Ireland (she is an Irish citizen)

As far as I can make out she is eligible for the 1 year J1 program as she graduated this month.I'm wondering if my wife and I can use her as an au pair for our infant? I don't know if this is allowed due to the family ties,but I'd love for my sister to au pair instead of putting our daughter into daycare.

Does anyone know if this is allowed or does anyone have any advice?

I'm a permanent resident from Ireland, my wife is a US Citizen.

Thanks

There wouldn't be a heck of a lot of a cultural exchange with your sister who has the same background.

Does anyone know if this is allowed or does anyone have any advice? It's not allowed. There is no way to bring your sister to the US to care for your baby.

I'm a permanent resident from Ireland, my wife is a US Citizen.

Thanks

Limitations/Exceptions for Au Pair work

Au Pairs cannot be placed:

  • With a family that has an infant less than three months old unless a parent or other responsible adult is at home;
  • In homes with children under two years of age unless the Au Pair has at least 200 hours of documented infant childcare experience;
  • In families with a special needs child(ren), as identified by the family, unless the au pair has identified his/her prior experience, skills or training in the care of special needs children and the host family has reviewed and acknowledged the au pair’s prior experience, skills, or training in writing; and
  • In the homes of relatives.

Great! I figured as much, thank for getting back to me!

She will just look in to getting a j1 placement at a hotel, related to her degree, luckily we are in FL so there are no shortage of places she could get a job!

Just be aware that she might have trouble getting a J1 with relatives in the US as they might think she is going to try and stay in the US.

^ This is something she may have problems with; especially with the VWP and ease of traveling to/from Ireland, it may be fairly difficult for her to prove she has no intent to stay.
