Jimmy Kimmel pressed Donald Trump on transgender bathroom rights. It didn't go well.

Donald Trump has repeatedly contradicted himself on many issues on the campaign trail. So while he was on Jimmy Kimmel's show on Wednesday, Kimmel tried to get some clarity on one of of those issues: transgender people and bathrooms.

It did not go well. Here is the transcript:

KIMMEL: You believe that transgender people should be able to use whatever bathroom they want to, which is contrary to what a lot of people, most people in your party believe. Why do you think people are focused on that?

TRUMP: What really I'm saying is and I think it's pretty simple let the states decide. And, you know, we have to protect everybody. It's a very, very small group. Right now, it's a very small group. Perhaps it's getting larger.

KIMMEL: But would you say, though, if you were voting personally, a member in New York state, that you would vote for that right?

TRUMP: Well, the party generally believes that whatever you're born, that's the bathroom you use.

KIMMEL: But what about you?

TRUMP: Me? I say let the states decide.

KIMMEL: Do you personally support it? I think you do.

TRUMP: No. What I support is let the states decide. And I think the states will do hopefully the right thing.

KIMMEL: And what's the right thing?

TRUMP: I don't know yet. I mean, I don't know. Honestly, I don't know.

Trump's position here simply makes no sense. He says we have to protect everybody, but then suggests that he doesn't know if he wants to protect trans people's right to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity. He also says that the states should decide the issue, but doesn't explain how he would vote at the state level if given the option. Then he says he doesn't know the right solution, despite saying before that he would let trans people use the bathroom for their gender identity at Trump Tower. The whole thing is just going in circles without any clarity.

The simple explanation here is that Trump's genuine belief trans people should be able to use the bathroom for their gender identity goes against what most of his Republican base believes, and he knows it. So like many politicians who've invoked the idea of states' rights to get away from claiming a clear stance such as Hillary Clinton on same-sex marriage in 2006 he's just saying "let the states decide" over and over without any clear hint of what that

Donald Trump backed down from much-hyped hypothetical debate he wanted to have with Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Trump, who has now secured enough delegates to clinch the Republican nomination, said that "now that I am the presumptive nominee, it seems inappropriate that I would debate the second place finisher," he said in a statement released today. Both Trump and Sanders said they wanted the debate to happen.

Trump reiterated his claim that "the Democratic nominating process is totally rigged" and said that "Crooked Hillary Clinton and Deborah Wasserman Schultz will not allow Bernie Sanders to win," he added, referring to the party chair.

Neither Clinton or Sanders have enough delegates to win at this point.

The prospect of a debate originated from a question Sanders submitted to Jimmy Kimmelahead of Trump's appearance on the late night talkshow Wednesday. At a press conference in North Dakota on Thursday, Trump was asked about it and said that money from the event should be raised "for maybe women's health issues or something."

Donald Trump under oath: Trump University's promises crumble The ads for his university were classic Donald Trump -- Trump stares into the camera and proclaims:

"We're going to have professors and adjunct professors that are absolutely terrific people, terrific brains, successful. We are going to have the best of the best... and these are people that are handpicked by me."

But a CNN investigation finds that Trump and others involved in the school admitted under oath that some promises made to students just didn't happen.

In Trump's own deposition this past December, Trump failed to recognize the name of a single presenter or teacher at his real estate seminars. He also confirmed he had nothing to do with the selection process of instructors who taught at the school's events or mentors for the school's "Gold Elite" programs.

A review of Trump University presenters and so-called real estate experts found many with questionable credentials and inflated resumes. Court documents show background-checks conducted during the hiring process could not determine whether some instructors even graduated high school.

Trump University brought in an estimated $40 million from up to 10,000 enrollees between 2005 and 2010, when the New York Department of Education said it was no longer allowed to call itself a university. The company changed its name to the Trump Entrepreneur Initiative and shut down in 2011.

As Trump looks ahead to the general election, criticisms and legal battles over his unlicensed university continue to chase him on the campaign trail. A ruling this month means one lawsuit filed against Trump University in California -- which could potentially have had him take the stand as he was running for president -- now won't go to trial until November 28, after the election. Two others remain pending, but all three suits argue the program defrauded students with marketing schemes built on empty promises.

As the lawsuits move forward, so do the depositions. And it is in deposition, under oath, where the truth has emerged behind Trump's university, his lack of involvement in the school's curriculum and his lack of knowledge about who was hired to teach what was advertised as "Trump's Secrets" to real estate success.

Representative Jerrold Nadler of New York, a Democrat whose district includes Lower Manhattan, has written a scathing open letter denouncingDonald J. Trump for receiving grant money intended for small-business owners after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mr. Nadler’s broadside against Mr. Trump is the latest salvo in efforts by Democrats to illustrate his use of various loopholes over the years to help his businesses.

Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, frequentlyinvoked New York’s post-9/11 resilience to combat criticism from his primary rivals over his New York roots.

Mr. Nadler described those words by Mr. Trump as “exploitation” of the city’s darkest day.

“When do you plan on returning the taxpayer money that was designated to ease the suffering of our city’s small-business owners?” Mr. Nadler wrote in the letter, a copy of which his office provided to The New York Times.

He was referring to reports that Mr. Trump had received $150,000 from the World Trade Center Business Recovery Grant program for his property at 40 Wall Street.

On February 7, Donald Trump told an audience of supporters in New Hampshire that he would represent their interests, but Jeb Bush would not, because Bush was in the pocket of special interests. Trump singled out Woody Johnson, the heir to a pharmaceutical fortune, owner of the New York Jets, and contributor to Bush. Trump suggested, not unreasonably, that Johnson’s support would ensure that Bush would never allow the federal government to negotiate for lower prescription-drug prices. “I don't get any money from any of these special interests, and I know the special interests — I know them better than anybody. But I don't want their money,” he said. “So tell me, let me ask you: Do you think Jeb Bush is going to make drug prices competitive?” he asked. The crowd shouted, “No!”

This week Trump announced that Johnson would serve as vice-chair of the Trump Victory Fund. “He’s a terrific guy, he’s been a friend of mine a long time,” Trump announced. It was a head-spinning move — the very man Trump had held up as the embodiment of corruption, and whose funds he pledged never to accept, would now take a prominent role as a Trump fund-raiser.

Donald Trump is a wildly promiscuous liar. He also has disturbing authoritarian tendencies. Trump’s many critics have seized upon both traits as his two major disqualifications for the presidency, yet both of them frustratingly defy easy quantification. All politicians lie some, and many of them lie a lot, and most presidents also push the limits of their authority in ways that can frighten their opponents. So what is so uniquely dangerous about Trump? Perhaps the answer is that both of these qualities are, in a sense, the same thing. His contempt for objective truth is the rejection of democratic accountability, an implicit demand that his supporters place undying faith in him. Because the only measure of truth he accepts is what he claims at any given moment, the power his supporters vest in him is unlimited.

Trump lies routinely, about everything. Various journalists have tried to tally up his lies, inevitably giving up and settling for incompletesummaries. Some of these lies are merely standard, or perhaps somewhat exaggerated, versions of the way members of his party talk about policy. (The “real” unemployment rate is as high as 42 percent, or his gargantuantax-cut plan “will be revenue-neutral.”) At times he engages in especially brazen rewriting of his own positions, such as insisting he opposed the Iraq War when he did not, or denying his past support for universal health insurance. Some of his lies are conspiracy theories that run toward the edges of respectable Republican thought (Barack Obama was actually born abroad) or even well beyond it (Ted Cruz’s father may have conspired to kill John F. Kennedy). In all these areas, Trump has merely improved upon the methods used by the professionals in his field.
