You are a permanent resident. Subway and all other large franchises use e-verify system that can tell them whether you are authorized to work in the U.S. Your authorization is not a problem at all.

I don't know about Michigan but here in Central NJ there are 3 minimum wage jobs for every person willing to work them. It used to be bad a few years ago but the economy is better now and you should have ZERO troubles finding a minimum wage job.

My advise is to hit every retail store you are ready to work at and ask point blank if they have jobs. If they are not used to seeing foreigners, take your husband with you for some credibility. Make sure you do the talking though cause they wanna see that you are interested. Applying online doesn't work as well as doing what I just said.

These jobs have very high turnover rates so they just want to hire people who will stick around for at least a few months.

well i am not sure if it is a good idea but the interviewer mentioned where the district manager location is and me and my husband is thinking of maybe going in there and showing proofs about the stamp that i have along with my SSN that i legal to work over here. i know there are other opportunities but it shouldnt be really hard to get in when you are legal to get one.

Make copies of everything to show you are eligible to work and furnish that at interview and explain your situation up front at the interview. That might help to.

Also, when my wife first got here, it was relatively easy for her to get work at a private nursing home in laundry. She did that at first, as well as worked as a substitute teacher. Then she worked in housekeeping at a hospital, and as a cafeteria server at a public high school. And she got hired on at a privately owned assisted living as a resident assistant too. Oh, and she also joined the United States Air Force Air National Guard for some additional part time work.

Fast forward to now, she is an RN at a local hospital on a cardio/pulmonary/renal unit.

oh cool. i saw a posting about being a subsitute teacher but it didnt mention how many hours it does give you. i am still looking for other potential jobs but i just hate the fact that they would question you about your legality to work when you are legal to do so.

Its hard to get a job especially for us. Im also looking for a job still its been a month since receiving my green card. I did not really look hard yet because my parents are here on a vacation.

What happen was when I had EAD, I tried to apply for a few jobs, the main reason that some employers do not want to recruit me is due to my EAD expiry date and they were looking for long term permanent full time staffs. Even by explaining to them its useless.

At the meantime I'm taking up some short courses and try to improve my skills. I hope we both get a job soon! Dont give up!

thats what i am trying to do right now but makes me wonder though since it is just the green card they said as their issue and i shouldnt have that because i have i-551 and SSN.

Same here.. I have been sending applications online and had a call then interview but they wanted a green card or EAD since I'm on K1.. I am still on the AOS process and I can't wait to have a job now.. I still been looking on the websites for jobs.. But on your case, I think it depends on the companies. I have read some posts that they were able to get a job and just showed the stamp. Maybe try to find companies that will allow you to work thru your stamp.. Goodluck!

Just an FYI since you specifically are here on a K1 and adjusting from that, you legally cannot work until you have your EAD in hand so applying for jobs before you have that is rather pointless since they cannot hire you until you can show them your EAD that proves you can work legally and most companies won't wait until yours comes in, they will just go with someone that can usually start right away.

when my husband got his social security card we went to DMV and got a State ID. when we applied for work I asked them what they needed and all they asked was for an ID and social. that's what we gave them without showing his passport. and we needed proof of residency since he only got here 4/29 and they took the piece of paper that came with his social security card with the address at DMV to prove that. maybe getting a state ID will help. and with job hunting I took him to a temp agency last week and he got hired on yesterday. temp to hire. its something while we find work or if they hire him on it will be even better

i just hate the fact that they would question you about your legality to work when you are legal to do so.

That's the law though. Companies have a legal obligation to ensure that the people they hire are authorized to work in the US. Part of your hiring process will be filling out an I-9 form as well, where the company checks with USCIS to see that you're eligible to work. On the last page of that form, it specifies exactly what documents are needed to establish identity and work authorization. I understand that a small Subways restaurant wouldn't know that, but I'm surprised their district office don't know about it... I guess since that Subways district aren't sure how it works, they rather not hire you than do something wrong and get slapped with a hefty fine. I would just keep looking, I'm sure there are plenty of other job opportunities.

Try joining an expat community in your area. I know several people who got jobs through recommendations from people they met in one of these expat organizations/communities. Also, create a profile on Indeed and set up some daily job alerts and start applying for jobs through there. Indeed is how I got my job.

been on indeed for a week now and saw a bunch of postings. i am still looking online and doing some walk ins hoping that i will get to hear from them soon. i was able to get an interview too with walk ins with another company but the manager is kind of getting fresh so i just opted not to pursue the final interview.

For those looking for jobs, I highly recommend the American Job Center. They offer free workshops, which were great help in preparing me for interviews, build an effective resume, and giving me confidence to know what I'm doing in the job searching process. I heard that only about 20% of the jobs are advertised online, while the other 80%, you have to know someone, be referred, etc. So I started joining groups, meetup.com groups, engineering association events, and so on.

I got 2 job offers from a conference/vendor expo within 1 week, so it did work for me. Plus, it was far more exciting to be connecting with people and enjoying the free food and drinks in the events, as compared to applying online and following up with emails, phone calls and voice mails.

I wouldn't give up so soon. If you are really dedicated, print out the instructions to form I-9 and on the last page you have lists: A, B and C. Highlight the item 3 in list A. That is the type of work authorization required that you have. By law they have to accept it. It would be discrimination if they didn't.

I totally agree that this is more of ignorance rather than companies being strict.

My daughter who just migrated here in the US last Feb, 2016, was recently employed and have to point out to the HR of the company that the stamp in her passport, is listed at the back of the i9 form, as a valid document to prove eligibility to work.

Sad but true, it s more of ignorance.

thats what im going to do too. print out forms from the government website and show it to them. and it is not giving up, it is about telling them facts.
