Several questions. One piece of firm advice.

1. Is he physically attacking you or is it verbal abuse?

2. Is he your fiance or your husband now? You talked about getting married and getting a divorce. This changes your legal status.

3. What would you do if you COULD work?

If he hits you, call the police and keep safe. There are domestic abuse caseworkers who will protect you, and you should be able to find legal aid to either establish your own life in America or find safe return travel to the Philippines.

If you file for divorce it won't be recognized in the Philippines. At least that is my understanding. Contact your embassy and see if they can arrange for you to return home.

Some of the most important things discussed during CFO seminar is "documenting" signs of abuse so you have evidence to present in case you report it. Write a diary, record verbally abusive remarks, if he physically hurts you take photos of the wounds or bruises.. More importantly, contact the counselors of CFO (their role doesn't end after the seminar) and also get in touch with the Philippine embassy.

Contact Ms. Joy Baonguis (Commission on Filipinos Overseas)

jbaonguis@cfo.gov.ph

She might be able to help you out or give you further advice on what to do. I hope everything will get better.

record verbally abusive remarks

In some states the above is illegal unless you have both parties permission.

If he hits you then call the police immediately, staying in the abuse and not telling anyone just so you can document it for vawa isn't safe thing to do.

If you feel unsafe get to a women's shelter please, they can provide you with a temporary place to stay. If you want to go home Contact the Philippines embassy, most embassies have systems in place for citizens who want to go home to obtain help in getting home, contacts with charities who can help pay for tickets and assistance with getting a passport if you can't get yours from him safely.

California is indeed one of the states where "two-party consent" is required (meaning one is not allowed to record a conversation unless the other party agrees to it). Edited by EM_Vandaveer

Simple as that and best decision so far. Just return home to family and friends who love and adore you.
