Working on Green Card (Married Name) with SSN with Maiden Name??? (temporarily)

Hello Everyone,

I am having trouble with changing my last name on my SS card from my maiden to my married name. Does anybody know whether I can legally start working before my name on SS card gets updated to match my Green Card?

I have had my GC for about a month now and went to SSA office a month ago to have my name changed. They said EAD was not enough so I went there again after I got my GC (only a week later after I received my EAD). They gave me a letter saying the will need to verify all info I provided and check with USCIS my status which may take up to 4 weeks and therefore I will probably receive new SS card in 3-4 weeks. They also said in their database my name will be changed immediately. It's been now over 3 weeks and I am getting nervous as when I called to check they not only saw no progress but apparently my name was still listed as maiden in SSA database!

I am planning to head again to my local SSA office to check this Monday though I have a feeling it will be a waste of time as they will say keep waiting we have no news for you. I am used to waiting by now and the only thing I worry is whether I can work even with the mismatch of last names on my GC and SSN? I am closing on a job offer and was planning on starting to work in June so I am trying to find out whether I actually will be legally able to start as I promised to my future employer...?

Anybody has experience with this?

Thanks so much in advance for any advice!
