Sticker on Expired Green Card

Hi everyone,

My wife and I just came back from a trip to Europe yesterday. Her green card expired on May 5th and she had the extension letter with her. The CBP officer took both of them along with her passport. He was really nice about the whole thing; however, he kept looking on the back of the green card for a "sticker." Does anyone know what this might be? I've heard of the stamp in the passport, but never about a sticker. The officer said "it should be fine" but went to check with someone else before letting us go. He came back and said we were good to go, but that "they usually put a sticker on the green card." So it was painless overall but it left us wondering what the sticker is, and if we're required to get it.

Thanks!

I did not have a sticker, news to me.

Who is they? When and how could they have done this?

Following, as we will be traveling to the UK soon after my 2 year GC expires. If there's something extra I will need to do as well as carrying the extension letter (all the paperwork will be sent in July, 90 days ahead of the expiry) I'd prefer to know in advance!

How old was the officer? Maybe they used to long time ago?

Looks like it was asked here before (DMV related): http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/203001-extension-letter-vs-extension-sticker-for-i-751/

Found this document from 2002 talks about a sticker for extension for I-90 and also I-89 (biometrics): https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/ilink/docView/AFM/DATAOBJECTS/App%2051_1.pdf

As I understand it, when someone renews an expiring 10-year GC, USCIS may either attach an extension sticker to the expired card, or put an I-551 stamp in the LPR's passport. If they add a sticker, it's done at the biometrics appointment.

They don't use the stickers on expired conditional/2-year GCs (although I don't know whether they did so in the past). The extension letter and the expired card are all the proof of legal status you should need, although if you're worried about re-entry after traveling overseas you could make an Infopass appointment and get an I-551 stamp in your passport.

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

He was pretty young, mid-30s I'd say. And, he did not mention who is "they" (USCIS I assume) and we were too tired and anxious to get back home to ask clarifying questions, unfortunately.

That's weird. Maybe he read in a field manual or something. ROCs are not something CBP agents see every day. Probably he was also having a long day himself and confused.

I took step daughter to her biometrics to have her green card renewed in february and they put a sticker on the back. It was a temporary extension because the officer said it would be at least 8 months before her new one would come.

Don't worry about any stickers. Just remember to take your NOA extension letter and your passport and you'll be just fine.
