Woodrow Wilson. Socialist who completely ignored the Constitution. Teddy Roosevelt has "credit" for this for having returned from an African hunting trip, running under the Bull Moose party, and splitting the Republican vote so that Wilson was put in the White House. Poor President Taft came in third; afterwards, in his gentle way, he apparently said, "I don't see how I could have done any differently than I have done."

Franklin Pierce wasn't even renominated by his own party after his first term. In fairness, the job was probably too big for him, and his wife died while he was in office. To his credit, he is (to my knowledge) the only president whose entire Cabinet remained intact during his term.

A bunch of those pre-Civil War presidents were forgettable. The Whig party kept nominating ancient military generals.

A sleeper as a "surprise" president was Chester A. Arthur. When he took office after Garfield's assassination, everyone thought that he would appoint his Cabinet and advisors purely out of patronage (crony) purposes. Instead, he appointed the very best people available to do the job. That showed character.
