God knows what percentage also work with an attorney, let's say 30% but still on a good estimate more than 50-60% off all ROCs do not research what is needed thoroughly and prepare a simple package without even knowing they are risking anything. I don't think there is any mystery there. Once they get RFE, then they join VJ and desperately ask for suggestions. That's a different story.

Well quite. At all stages of the journey I've seen people ask the most naive questions which suggest they're either bone idle, done zero research or haven't realised the seriousness of this endeavour and the effort and diligence needed. That said I've always had admiration for those who have to navigate what for them is a foreign language to understand the detail and nuance of the requirements. Heck - sometimes I've even need clarification of the arcance language of the DHS.

I can't imagine having done this process without VJ and the people on it.

There are ~180-200 thousand ROC petitioners each year and looking at the traffic on this website maybe 1-2%, but let's exaggerate and say 10% of all ROC cases gets advice from websites like this when they prepare their package.

If someone actively participates on this website and despite all horror stories wants to send a weak list of evidence, then yes it could be a mystery.

Well worded, Charmander...there is no mystery!

My friend is using a lawyer for her husband's ROC. She told me the lawyer asked for them to send in "a few pictures and some bank statements". I was like wow, that's all? I sent her my list of evidences that I mailed in. My ROC packet was nearly 300 pages long. I included every page of every month of our joint bank statements. Is it possible that it's 300 pages of "garbage"? Sure. But I received not one, not two, but THREE bogus RFE's during the CR1 process (where I ended up sending in the SAME DOCUMENTATION again, they had just read things wrong). I'm not trying to be in that boat again. I was also very careful to label everything and put sticky notes so they can easily maneuver through the packet. My hope is they'll open my giant packet, take a flip through a few things and then be like "Yup, this is heavy enough. Approved!" :goofy:

based on that, lucybelle, the opposite can happen too. Send in too much, and stuff gets misread/misunderstood and you get the RFE anyway.
