just a quick warning - pepto bismal is NOT safe for cats - it contains salicylates - the same ingredient as aspirin and that is toxic to cats - even a child's aspirin can kill a cat. It is best to avoid ALL medications for humans unless specifically recommended for cats - they have a uniquely and finely tuned nervous system that reacts totally differently than a human or a dogs does.

That being said, vets do give cats benedryl for allergic reactions so contact your vet and ask if benedryl might assist the cat in breathing and then arrange for the proper dosage levels. Outside of that you can use the humidification routine, also getting a warm soft cloth and cleaning around the eyes and nose of the cat to clear as much of the mucous away as you can.

Also, be very diligent in making sure that the cat continues to eat. Cats require 'smell' often to eat and when they are congested and can't smell food, they don't eat. Get really smelly stuff like tuna to encourage him to keep an appetite. You can worry about getting them back to a proper diet after they are over the illness. Serving regular catfood warmed in the microwave also helps to release its odour and help him to smell it. Cats who fast more than a day are susceptible to liver difficulties - and the heavier the cat to begin with, the more at risk he is of developing hepatic lipidosis.

Cuddling him, babying him, making sure he gets his medication, keeping the nose and eyes clear will all help him to recover quickly. Good luck:-).

Sorry to hear that your little one isn't feeling well! Unfortunately a lot of shelter cats come home with upper respiratory issues. One of my brother and sister-in-law's cat is named Sneazy for just that reason!

But you certainly are giving her the right TLC and I am sure she will be sounding less like a duck soon!
