I went to an 'irish' pub in San Diego a few years ago... it was quite a nice pub, but I remember being bemused by the menu. It had a special section for 'traditional irish fare', which contained only two dishes:

1) Clam chowder, served in one of those bread-bowl things

2) Chilli. Served with tortilla chips.

Haha, unreal! Still, I did get asked how I spoke such good English for a foreigner once so maybe I shouldnt be so surprised.

Chris and I thought about opening an English Pub here in NC. Trying to make it authentic as possible.

We even looked into brewing our own beer.

Staggeringly I once got asked "are there black people in England?", I couldnt decided if that was worse than "how do i speak English?" or not.

to the english question I said "I knew I was coming to America to visit and really tried hard to pick it up in time so I could speak to Americans when I was out and about"

and to the "blac"k question...well...I really tried not to laugh, it was like a question a parent might get from a small child who really doesnt know.

The funny thing is, they thought I was serious both times and actually thanked 'people like me' for learning a foreign language. My fiancée kicked me under the table because she knew i was taking the pee.

See, this is so shocking, I had to spell it out.

I know.... I mean, you don't expect authentic irishness from ANY pub that proclaims itself to be irish, obviously, but... going to all the trouble of making space for a special 'irish' menu, consisting of the least irish food items ever... #######?! I should've recommended they add, I dunno, paella and lasagne to that. And a nice lamb Madras.

I'll resist putting this one in the other thread ('cos I felt mean for laughing), but my fiance's daughter asked me a while back 'do you speak english in England, or do you have a different language there?'... I felt bad for being amused, 'cos she was only 8 at the time... but still. When I pointed out that English is called English for a reason, there was a huuuuuge long pause followed by 'ohhh... I thought maybe you talked irish or some other special language like that'. But like I said, she was 8 - I know plenty of people who've been asked that by adults, and they have no excuse!

Well, if you do find any naans I'd be interested in knowing where ya got 'em from....

I don't know about naan, but I get frozen paratha from the asian or halal markets that you just cook up in the frying pan and I think they're really tasty!

alright everyone that was complaining and missing NAAN BREADS. I the maker of this thread didn't even watch those videos...Chris did. But I watched the NAAN one and oh my gosh that is so easy!!!! We can all make it!!

I am going to have a dinner party after all this wedding ####### is over and I will make home made naan bread!!! Ya.
