ITIN & London Embassy

With the closing of tax season recently, and questions about foreign spouses and etc, I wanted to confirm that London Embassy will copy a UK Passport, stamp and sign a document to include with the W7 when applying for an ITIN. I read on VJ when researching that sometimes it is done, sometimes not. So I wanted to confirm, yes it can be done. I got my husband's ITIN in the mail yesterday.

He was advised though, to date the W7 form close to the date of that it will be submitted to IRS, because Embassy has noticed they (IRS) may not accept it. They had people have to come back to get new copy/stamp/signature. Anyway, just a FYI, this was done for 2015 taxes and included with my tax return. Now I'm just waiting on the tax return itself...

Posted here because it has to do specifically with US London Embassy.

Very good information. Can you explain how he did it? Appointment? What section of the embassy did he go to? Is there a phone number or way to contact the right section?

Please refer to the Embassy’s notary webpage for further information - https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/notary-services-for-all-nationalities/. Please note that although it is not specifically detailed on our website, we are able to provide this service. U. S. Embassy, London, cannot authenticate a copy of your husband’s passport. Assuming he has a foreign (non-US) passport, we will stamp it “Seen and Returned,” and affix all requisite stamps/seals to satisfy the W7 requirements for an ITIN.

Please read the information and then click on the relevant link to schedule an appointment. Please note that the appointment booking system reflects real time availability. Additional regular appointments are opened every Friday one month in advance. Should your requirement be urgent, you may email us to request an emergency appointment.

Kindest regards,

My husband did have an appointment, which I actually schedule for him online. We had to check several times because new appointments only updated only at a certain time. There are two entrances for the Embassy - visas/green cards and appointments. The link in the email is still valid and provides more information. The cost of the appointment was $50, but so worth it. (Tax refund made up for it! Thanks for that btw, Nich-Nick!)

This is good info thanks for posting.

What was the timeline for you to have your ITIN in your hand?

Can you share anything about the stages of the process at high level and how long it took including your interaction with the London Embassy?

I might need to go through this very soon (and will be time critical) so would be really helpful to know.

Thanks

I filed the ITIN with my tax return by paper, so it took 6 weeks. Though, I have seen some on here within 3 weeks. I filed in early April, so it was also crush time for IRS with loads of requests.

As for other steps, the appointment was scheduled several weeks in advance, because that is when they offered appointments. As for how long it took at Embassy, husband said maybe an hour total - arriving, going through security, being escorted to appropriate place, and leaving. He actually took his time and talked with the security guards also. He's ex-military and enjoyed the conversation with the guys there apparently. lol
