Hi! Is TOEFL a requirement when applying for a job in the US if you're from a foreign country and just moved there under spouse visa?

I see. Thanks! The reason I asked is because I'm an occupational therapist licensed abroad. Most of my colleagues here moved and work in the US now with a working visa and they had to pass TOEFL prior to taking the national board exam which is NBCOT to be eligible to work in the US.

I'm not yet eligible to practice my profession in the US as I have not taken that exam. But I'm hoping I could work at least as an assistant or aid to registered occupational therapists.

When applying for teacher's certificate, you will be asked for your education proofs. A foreign diploma should be evaluated by a US accredited evaluation agency.

It's not the requirement. Just your foreign degree will do.

English proficiency (TOEFL) is required as part of the credentialing process for health care workers who come to the USA on work visas. It can be waived if they come from a country where the primary language is English. Occupational therapists are one of the occupations covered by this process. This is a requirement of USCIS before the work visa can be issued.

The process is not applicable to spousal visas. In this case, you are already in the USA. You only have to meet the specific requirements of the licensing agency. It doesn't appear that TOEFL is needed to take the NBCOT exam, but you may want to check with them to be sure.
