Dear Team,

My fiance has a social security card that says "Valid for work only with DHS authorization".

My understanding is that that once we get married, we apply for his authorization to work. He will be able to work in a couple months, but it will take several months to get his 2 year green card.

Since he already has a social security number, I was wondering if the Social Security Government office will issue him a new Social Security card before the Green Card has been issued? (I.e. While he is on the temporary authorization to work, will they issue him a new social security card without those words?)

My concern is that when he applies for jobs, they may ask for a copy of his Social Security card. With those words on it, they may assume he is not eligible to be hired, when in fact he is.

Thank you.

The SSA will not issue an unannotated card until he receives his GC. However, an employer should not assume that he is ineligible to be hired simply because his SS card has that annotation.

The annotation "valid for work only with DHS authorization" means that the social security card itself is not proof that he is eligible to be employed in the US and that it must be accompanied by an EAD. He will be presenting both the card and the EAD, so he shouldn't have any issues.

Eighteen years in the US and I still don't understand Velveeta, TV ads for prescription drugs, only getting 2 weeks paid vacation, or why anyone believes anything they see on Fox "News".

Your fiance does not have a green card yet

His ssn card is correct with the wordings "Valid for work only with DHS authorization".

=> meaning he needs EAD to work legally.

Once he has the green card, go back to the SS office to remove the wordings from the SSN card.

Done with K1, AOS and ROC
