Thought I'd drop a thread in to see if anyone's still here following POE & waiting for AOS. What's everyone up to & how is the adjusting to life in the US going?

I arrived on 12th March, married on 8th April & filed AOS/EAD/AP at the beginning of May - NOA1 came in this week so we're in progress.

I think I'm adjusting quite well now, i had a major wobble the first weekend here where I wondered if I'd be able to adjust to being so far from the UK - that lasted for 2 days then it passed!

My son (17) & his girlfriend came out for a week for the wedding so spent a nice time with them showing them the sights.

Had no problems in the end getting my SSN & state ID (non-drivers license), I do have to redo my state ID though when the K1 90 days expires in June.

I've been to a job fair in the Downtown area which was really helpful ready for when I can start applying, they helped transfer my UK CV to resume format & advised on what the differences would be.

I have a monthly bus pass ($36) so I can travel anywhere in the local metro area, that's really helped to acclimatize me & there is a 2 mile walking trail literally minutes from the apartments.

I've had my first training session with the volunteer park rangers & have volunteered with the local soccer club on a match day collecting tickets.

Been exposed to some weird weather - tornado warnings the first weekend here & again this week, experienced the craziest thunderstorms & flash flooding!!

Lost power for over 12 hrs after a driver took out an energy pole & brought all the power lines down at the entrance to the apartments in the middle of the night! They ended up having to replace 5 poles!

Oh & not forgetting getting used to all the wonderful places to eat!

So that's me so far………..

Hi GAvw72,

Sounds lovely and that you are adjusting well.

I've been here since December and we got married the day after NY's in St Louis, MO where i would love that we be living right now but alas it is not meant to be for a while.

Lets see: We live in a smaller 'city' and its a change from Sunny Metro Multicultural Sydney Australia.

Tried a few restaurants in town- not worth the dollars unless its burgers and things that i don't cook.

I have been getting our apartment into shape, organising, cleaning etc.

Gone to estate sales to find interesting pieces- we love antiques.

done trips to Georgia to visit friends.

Got my SSN- no problem.

I can still drive on my Aus license.... and can't get my Local Al drivers licence yet cuz of paper work...

Just got my EAD and AP so i guess i can get started on that now- studying for the test.

Yup the tornando warnings are fun...

We've made friends- found a church to attend and we frequent FLorida on weekends.

I've also started to experiment and perfect my cooking skills in preparation to start a home business.

Thats me thus far... :)

Hi,

Checking in from North Carolina, been here since Feb 21st, married Feb 29th - we live at the bottom of Mt Pisgah in 4 acres of some of the most beautiful country (Google fall colours in Asheville)

AOS is underway, had my biometrics today and got an RFE but that's ok as my husbands tax returns are bound up in the estate of his late wife so we expected it :)

I'm keeping busy making changes to the house, we're doing some major renovations inside and out and with 4 acres of forest there's a lot keep me busy!

Not decided if I'll get a job in time, I'm very lucky that I don't need to work, have to say I've not had a moment of homesickness, no regrets and absolutely love it here :)

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey
