I Work in Hospitality and I am moving with my Spouse to the US (ORLANDO - FLORIDA), she has never been to the US except for holidays (but she has a US Passport). We have no idea where to start. According to the research we did, We need to be physically present to open Bank accounts and we can't search for apartments without a Bank account and I am pretty sure we need an address to open a Bank account.

Can anybody please enlighten us???

For Hospitality people: Do we need any national qualifications/requirements before I can search for a job?

hi

your wife isn't going anywhere yet, the process for a green card takes a year more or less

you must have reestablished US domicile by the time or before your wife comes

you can return and open bank accounts, get a place and a job,

if you don't make enough or you don't have assets, you will need a joint sponsor

to come to the US to adjust status is considered immigration fraud

Follow the guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/i130guide1

Expect the process to take around a year. If the petitioner's income isn't sufficient then you will require a joint sponsor.

As stated, domicile will be an issue since she has never lived in the US.

I think the Op's question is less about the visa process, and more about living in the USA and how to adjust, as neither he nor his USC wife have lived here before?

In terms of hospitality, if you mean working at a hotel, no specific qualifications are needed (in fact, front desk type jobs tend to be low paid and entry level), though GMs tend to have MBAs.

For bank accounts yes, they usually want you to be there, and show proof of ID. Many banks will say they must have a SSN for both parties of a joint account, but this is not actually true.

Bye: Penguin

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

Thanks Penguin.. You hit this one pretty spot on! :)

my visa application was already approved and I got my yellow envelope already, heading out next month but yes essentially I am really clueless as to WHAT to do once i get there :/ ...

I was thinking of Verizon as mobile service provider and Bank of America as my Bank, according to what i found out they are pretty popular and reliable?

As for work i should be fine, but i'm just wondering about prerequisites such as local certifications such as Food Handlers, Alcohol Handling etc etc.. :)

But yes I am open to more ideas and help! Thanks to all those who answered :)

You might be here already but here are my thoughts:

The Verizon phone network is mostly CDMA - so if you get service through them you probably won't be able to use your same phone when you visit Mauritius (I say mostly - I think there are some dual CDMA/GSM phones and they might even offer some GSM service but - just be aware of the difference.)

Florida is hot. Yea, I know I know, tropical island and all that, but...just be prepared :-)

I think Bank of America should be fine to use - we also have HSBC over here in case you might already have an account/relationship with them.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for getting back to me :) ... I read abit on the differences (thank you very much), and it turns out maybe we will grab AT&T for GSM, hopefully it will be a good idea because we've gotten mixed reviews about AT&T...

And yes, hopefully we are ready to confront the warm/hot weather in florida :)

well we asked the HSBC and they are a different company altogether so accounts that are open here are not automatically accessible in other countries :/ ... I think that one we will stick to bank of America ;)

Again thank you very much for these new info, we will be moving there on Monday :) and all information we can get will help us greatly :)
