Thinking ahead: police certificate and military record

Hi,

I hope your cases are all going well. We've just received the NOA1. I know we probably have a long wait ahead of us before the next step, but I'm trying to plan ahead for the IV packet.

Looks like my husband needs a police certificate. My question is, from where? He is a citizen of Tajikistan but hasn't lived there for about 10 years. He's been living in Czech Republic for most of that time (we live in Czech Republic now and will be there until he gets his visa).

So, should he get a police certificate for Tajikistan, or Czech Republic, or both? (We're not trying to get it now; I know it needs to be current. Just thinking ahead. Getting papers from Tajikistan is a real pain in the butt!)

Also, military records. Is this only for US military? My husband had one year of compulsory military service in the Soviet army just before the USSR broke up (so, over 25 years ago). Does he need to show any records of that?

Thanks and have a great day!

He will need police certificates for both Tajikistan and the Czech Republic.

From the department of state website:

Tajik citizens should apply for a police certificate at Information Centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Tajikistan. Non-Tajik citizens should apply at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan. Applicants, both Tajik and non-Tajik citizens, residing outside Tajikistan may submit the request through the Tajik Mission in their country of residence.

So if there is a Tajik embassy in the Czech Republic he can get it there.

It will also need to be translated.

He will need military records. It applies to everyone not just people who served in the US military.

Timeline in brief:

Thanks!

There is no Tajik embassy or consulate in Czech Republic; that's why it's such a pain :-( We have to get our papers from Berlin

Do you know exactly what they mean by "military records?" My husband doesn't understand what they want.

This page, on the State Department's website, outlines NVC's requirements for police certificates and military records, etc.

You can use the "Reciprocity by Country" search box for each country to see how to obtain the records your husband will need.

I am not familiar with the procedure for obtaining records from countries that no longer exist. My guess is that your husband will request his military records from Tajikistan, but hopefully someone who knows the answer will reply.

2012: Married
2014 2016 2017: I-130 packet direct to Frankfurt

Frankfurt's "steps" to DCF:

Step 1: I-130 Petition Checklist (PDF, from their USCIS page)

Step 2: Immigrant/Fiance(e) & K-Visa Applicant Checklist (PDF, from their Appointment & Interview page)

Thanks! I didn't know about the search box and that will be useful.

My husband showed me some document from his army days that looked kind of like a passport. Probably a military ID. Looks like that's the "voyenniy bilet" they need. So, one more thing we already have, just need to have it translated :-)

For the military records, from my understanding, they just want the document that proves the dates and that you were not dishonourably discharged.
