Name confusion on Visa and Social Security - Middle Name and First Name combined

Hi All,

My fiance arrived in the US and we married and applied for a SSN. The social security office put her name down as:

I am making up a name just for the example:

On SS document:

Last Name: Nguyen

First Name: Thi Thanh Thao (correct first name is Thanh Thao and Thi is middle name)

On Visa:

Last Name: Nguyen

Given Name: Thi Thanh Thao

If Thi is middle name, is the name on the Visa wrong?

I told the lady in the social security office that "Thi" is my fiance's middle name and "Thanh Thao" is her first name. However, she told me that she has to go with the I94 and Given Name is the Same as First Name and if we want to change that we have to work with immigration.

Has this been an issue with anyone here?

U need to Contact Customs Boarder Patrol at your local office to have them correct it on the i94 form. Then you'll have to go back to SSN office and have them change it. I had the same issue and they corrected it. Took them 2 days to correct it and I printed out a new I94 to show the correct name to Social Security Office.

I contacted Customs & Border Protection in Los Angeles and they told me that they can't fix this problem since the name on the I-94 matched the name on the Visa which has the middle name and first name switched places. They told me that I and my fiance need to contact the US Embassy in Tijuana and get an appointment, and they will fix it for us. I asked if my fiance can get out of the US and come back and they told me yes.

This is wild. What solution do I have other than calling the US embassy in Tijuana?

OK, I googled this website and found out that my fiance can't travel outside the country during this time because it is considered self-deportation. I emailed the embassy in HCM in Vietnam and the National Visa Center to ask about this case. I will let you know what happen.

First I tried to call the NVC but I was the wait list for an hour and still didn't get through so I had to use the email form on their website.

Vu&Nhung, is this happening to you or you already fixed the problem. I am curious to see what you have tried.

U can't travel outside the USA since she came on a K-1 visa. You would need to file for AOS then get AP and then you guys can travel.

Zeta, you mentioned that you had a similar problem but was able to correct the name with Custom and Border Protection. Was the incorrect name only on the I-94 and not the visa?

It was incorrect on the I94 not the visa. for example Thanh Thuy was on the i94 but on the visa it was Thuy Thanh so they corrected it.

Thanks. I talked to a person at the LA Custom and Border Protection and he told me that he would be able to help cases like you but not like mine. He also said that the firstname and middlename swap is a big issue for Vietnamese and Chinese.

Its difficult to deal with the name change if the visa is also incorrect. Maybe try heading to the local embassy or CBP office to try and get it squared away.

Technically there is no local US embassy on US soil. CBP can't help with this that why he is suggesting traveling to Tijuana, Mexico but that requires getting a permit.

I am waiting for the National Visa Center and the US embassy in HCMC to respond because I submitted questions online because it was too difficult to get through on the phone. If I get no help, I will contact the local USCIS office next.

My fiancee has the sAmerican problem, she just arrived in the US a week ago. The PoE people were no help and the SS office people were no help. 

How did you reslove this issue?
