Rubio says Congress needs to approve Zika virus funding

MIAMI (AP) – Sen. Marco Rubio is pressing his congressional colleagues to approve nearly $2 billion to fight the Zika virus.

In an interview Tuesday with CNN’s Jake Tapper, the Florida senator said he’s disturbed that members of his own party are standing in the way of fully funding a response to what’s an emerging public health crisis.

Rubio backs President Barack Obama’s $1.9 billion request for emergency money to combat the virus, which causes serious birth defects. But Congress has not moved on it, and there’s no obvious path forward, despite a growing threat in the hot summer months and increasing public anxiety.

The administration has already transferred almost $600 million of unused Ebola funds and other money to fight Zika in the near term, but it says more is urgently needed.

Something needs to be done before it becomes a global crisis. Don't forget that the summer Olympics will be in Rio. Plus this disease can spread sexually. It's going to be a public health disaster. Calling it now.

What can be sexier than telling people that Zika is kind of like the worst sort of STD caused by blood-sucking monsters, that affects not only you but your potential unborn offspring? I mean they are basically telling men they shouldn't have sex with their wives/gfs for a significant period of time. If that doesn't get politicians moving on the issue... what will? Want couples to practice safe sex in loving married relationships? Want people to have healthy children? Don't want people to make a hard choice like an abortion? These should be issues a lot of people in congress should be interested in.

I'll make it easy for you.

They fly.

They are everywhere.

They are prolific breeders and can hatch in a tiny amount of water.

They bite you.

They drink your blood and infect others.

And finally, they don't care about walls, borders, or immigration. Unless the USCIS starts giving them a visa too, or Trump issues an executive order to ban all mosquitos... well he might let some of them in, maybe... maybe his friends.. you know, only the good ones, the ones that know the best words. We'll talk.

I can't tell if you guys are trolling or if you are all genuinely this deluded. Do you not realize that people all over the world travel to South America? Throw the summer Olympics (which is in August by the way) into the mix and you have a global health disaster. We're talking hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world, including American citizens, going to Brazil and potentially coming back infected with a disease that can spread sexually. There is no cure, treatment or vaccination. Adults may experience a flu like illness but can fight it off. Unless of course you have a compromised immune system. Unborn babies are the ones at risk for microcephaly. In politics, no one cares about anything until it affects them personally.
