Hi everybody,

Is it enough to just submit a W2 or is a proof of income tax returns necessary if you are not self-employed?

The german embassy checklist says the following:

Proof of U.S. federal income tax returns for the most recent tax year are required from all Sponsors - K visa applicants may present their own assets as proof, a tax return is not required.

So according to this a W 2 should be fine.

Im a little confused now because on previously asked questions about this and on many internetpages it always states that a copy of income tax return is necessary.

Thanks in advance. :)

W2 is just one component of the tax return. So either you submit W2 along with the copies of your tax return or you submit the tax return transcript from IRS.

You are sitll required to provide the evidence of your current income.

American embassy in Germany, not the German embassy. Tax transcripts for most recent three years, W-2/pay stubs, and other proof that shows income stream. If you can supply tax returns from a CPA (certified public accountant), that will suffice. Best to give a lot of income proof. I went to my fiancee's interview and we discussed financial info more than anything - although I was easily above the minimum levels. It seems that the consulate officer knew about my fight with the IRS (tax officials) and some contested tax filings. My paperwork was a mess - my fault. Get everything in order and give them everything you have.

No, according to that, you have two choices:

1) You use a US sponsor - and he needs to show his most recent tax return (not just the W2)

2) You can choose to self-sponsor using assets (your own savings etc)

If it isn't difficult, it isn't worth it.
