Trying to save (internet) face after the TMI firestorm I got for the sex/pubic hair postings. Jeez. I guess I'll stick to global warming, the right of Israel to exist, and the like for a while, when I need to blow off some steam.

I should be writing my Ph.D. thesis, which I need to finish in the next three weeks, while also preparing a conference paper and a job talk!

i'm still waiting for the poll on pubic hair. :innocent:

I should be out partying! HRMPH!

All my friends that I've made in this town are all married & homebodies. Not that I want someone who's NOT married specifically, but they're all 'my kid this, my husband that'. Meanwhile, the kid's like 20 and all his mother does is 'yadda yadda yadda'. My other friend has a much older SO and at 4 years older than me, just became a 'step-grandma' :o

I miss my friends in the UK and my friends in Lauderdale. And I'm certainly not going drinkin alone, so here I is.

If it's any consolation Marlo, I wasn't offended by your post - actually I snorted with laughter because I thought the article was really funny! Having said that I am really comfortable with any kind of conversation - I mean, I'm not going to sit around discussing torture best-practise 101 but I dunno - most conversational subjects interest, rather than bother me. Plus I really thought you handled yourself well there in the thick of it, when you could have gone all out and started throwing insults around. Cudos.

I love how this post has become a discussion of linguistics! Can you paste a picture of one of the long Berber words without vowels and tell us what it means? :) Culture is so fascinating! Anyway I have just coem out the bath and I think I'm going to make some pasta now...mmm..foood....

Thanks. I don't really care for fascists throwing their "morals" in my face, so whatever. They're still dragging it out, and I'm not going to give in. My intentions were't bad, and they totally jumped on me. I could have maybe used some more tact, but whatever. Anyway...

One of the better words in Tashlhiyt Berber is:

tftktstt, which means 'you sprained it'

You can find some sound files with pronunciations here:

http://www.phon.ox.ac.uk/~jcoleman/TPS.html

Mmarlo, I always wanted to be a linguist.

Cool. Not something you're going to make much money doing, unless you can figure out how to get a computer to understand human speech. But that's not my thing.

Voice recognition technology is exciting!!

Microsoft Corp. said yesterday it will buy privately held Tellme Networks, a voice-recognition technology company, to bolster its communications push and enhance searches over mobile phones.

[...]

"Speech is universal, simple and holds incredible promise as a key interface for computing," said Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer.

[...]

Credit Suisse analyst Jayson Maynard, who estimates Microsoft paid more than $1 billion for Tellme, said in a note to clients the company is cash-flow positive with annual revenue of more than $100 million.

Indeed. It's really cool, but Ballmer has oversimplified the problem. If it had been that easy, the problem would have been solved in the 1950s. But it's a pretty exciting area to be in if that's your thing. Makes me think of Scotty in the original Star Trek movies in his Scottish accent saying "Computah?". Unfortunately, it's really hard to get a computer to "hear" different pronunciations of the same word by different speakers as the same word, without quite a bit of training.

I got sick and tired of driving down to Lauderdale to go party, but then if I invite ppl up here, I'm stuck doing the Disney/Universal stuff. Not that I don't mind Universal every now and again, it just becomes Groundhog Day for me aside from the fact it's still like 50 miles away. And hey Lisa! Where's a good place to party up here?

'Why I have no earthly clue' lol

Why you only in Minne for 5 mos? Where ya goin? And why did I think you lived in NY? Good luck on the diet tho!!

I hear ya, Lisa and Alex! Definitely know what it is like to be living in a place with minimal friends (probably why I am so obsessed now with VJ).

If I was still in Georgia, I would definitely be out, drinking green beer and not even touching a computer until a hungover afternoon.

It was a financially good choice for me to move to NH, but dang I miss having lots of friends!!!

Hehe cuz I signed a lease in NY and almost moved there til I lost it, and then Rey was coming and I couldn't afford another trip out there and in losing my lease I lost my moving truck driving partner, blablabla the move was postponed. I'm getting really tired of this city, although I love it.

I think if I had to do Universal every time people came to visit me I'd scream. I guess that is an upside of living in a city that has absolutely no tourism. :P

I should be major cleaning the house.

*hey Jenn! how's that march madness going for ya?*

So instead of cleaning, I'm drinking a strawberry smoothie I just whipped up.

Jackie (F)

YUMMMM!!!! Smoothies are soooooo good. Off topic here, but...anyone got any good recipes for smoothies? :D

My husband has to work all weekend....*sigh*. No, I'm not going to complain, I'm glad he has a job. So here I'll sit even though I *should* be doing a small bit of packing. For such a small house we have a lot of stuff!
