Okay. I should be cleaning my office right now, and strating to re-arrange the living room.

Instead I am running a bath in which I will sit reading a very much more interesting book and eating Cadburys Creme eggs, and drinking tea. my office meanwhile will remain a mess.

Anyone else? :P:devil:

Trying to save (internet) face after the TMI firestorm I got for the sex/pubic hair postings. Jeez. I guess I'll stick to global warming, the right of Israel to exist, and the like for a while, when I need to blow off some steam.

I should be writing my Ph.D. thesis, which I need to finish in the next three weeks, while also preparing a conference paper and a job talk!

I've been quite the multitasker all day: studying stochastic modelling, watching the NCAA tournament, and keeping abreast of the happenings on VJ. I'm thinking of quitting the first one though pretty soon as my brain is starting to hurt.

JayJay - what book?

and mmarlo - what's your Ph.D. thesis on?

mmarlo - what's your Ph.D. thesis on?

It's about some dialects of a language of western Kenya.

Jenn, does your husband speak any languages besides Moroccan Arabic, French, and English? Specifically, does he speak a dialect of Berber? I have a friend who speaks the Tamazight dialect. Berber dialects are so interesting because they have (long) words without vowels.

Wow, sounds interesting. I find linguistics fascinating.

My husband does speak Italian and Spanish in addition to the languages you mentioned, but no, he doesn't speak any Berber dialects. And thank goodness, I know I'm gonna have a hard enough time learning Darija, let alone a Berber dialect with no vowels! I believe there are several women who frequent the MENA forum whose SO's do speak Berber dialects.

Cool. Good luck. I know Darija has a lot of differences from Classical Arabic and the middle eastern dialects. Should be interesting and challenging! :-)

If it's any consolation Marlo, I wasn't offended by your post - actually I snorted with laughter because I thought the article was really funny! Having said that I am really comfortable with any kind of conversation - I mean, I'm not going to sit around discussing torture best-practise 101 but I dunno - most conversational subjects interest, rather than bother me. Plus I really thought you handled yourself well there in the thick of it, when you could have gone all out and started throwing insults around. Cudos.

I love how this post has become a discussion of linguistics! Can you paste a picture of one of the long Berber words without vowels and tell us what it means? :) Culture is so fascinating! Anyway I have just coem out the bath and I think I'm going to make some pasta now...mmm..foood....
