I taught my wife how to parallel park but later found out that Florida no longer requires it on the road test. She was quite happy about that.

But I'm still a parallel parking pro!

Seriously who really parallel parks anymore

If you live in a tiny town like we do, then all the time. If you live in the city where there is no offsite parking, then also all the time.

But despite this, MD basically got rid of needing to know parallel parking to even pass, so... I'm sure kids will start smashing through cars up on the curb really soon. Or maybe that's why I see so many people taking up three parallel parking spaces leaving no room for anyone else...

Me me me... Gives me an advantage over all those people who never learned to do it. Comes in handy at lunch time for busy restaurants with street parking. I see people all the time give up and go away and I slip right in. he he

Had my road test today and I passed!!! Unbelievably happy and relieved. I honestly never thought it was possible I know it sounds weird but it's a dream come true :) it was a simple test, zero parking except next to a curb. It lasted 17 min but then I spent literally 25 minutes in the car after the test talking to the agent (he was a cop for 30 years) who was super nice and he was just talking about nit picky agents and people who take the test and don't know their left and right, just casual, light-hearted stuff. My husband was freaking out because I was talking to him so long he thought I was arguing with him because I failed. I was SOOOOO HAPPY!!!!!! no more wasting the night having to practice every day. I can finally get a job now and live our life. Just wanted to share that with everyone and good luck/preparation for those getting theirs!

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/DriverLicense/ApplyforLicense.htm

looks like you're off the hook for any driver's ed courses, but I'm pretty sure you gotta take a written and pass a vision test. It looks like if you're over 18 you'll be issued a class c license with the same restrictions as a learner license (aka have to drive with someone who has a license)... a written test is nothing compared to a road test so don't worry about it haha

all that info is in the first couple of pages of the manual http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetforms/Forms/DL-7.pdf

also it looks like you don't have to go through the dmv but instead the texas department of public safety so consider yourself lucky lol. ALSO your fees are EXTREMELY cheap compared to other states. AP/EAD should definitely be enough :)

Glad to hear your update. My husband is from Delhi. Despite all his family driving in DELHI (no way I could drive in Delhi!) he never did. He is coming in July. He has started lessons in Delhi. I've been worried about him driving here. It's a MUST. this thread has calmed my nerves. Thank you!

I can totally relate with this topic.

Even though I had a drivers license in my country I barely was behind the wheel. I'm terrified and found the changing gears (shifts?) the most confusing thing ever. I also worked in a part of the city where parking spaces were rarely available and used public transportation.

But everything here is far away, the buses only take you to a few places, you have to take multiple transports to get to major cities... I'll have to man up and do it. Thank you for sharing and encouraging others in similar situation. And congrats on your license!

Since you're from Canada, you don't have to do the written test as long as you surrender your Canadian driver's license.

You need to do vision and driving skills test plus show proof of having been a Texas resident for 30 days.

You're lucky you don't have to do the written test, it's actually quite difficult in Texas. Almost half the questions for new driver's licenses seems to do with people under 21, like if an 18 year old is driving XX miles above the speed limit and causes an accident, what consequences is the driver facing... Got so many questions like that, felt like raising my hand and going "eeeeh: , I'm 40 years old so can we just skip the minor questions"... :D

Book your driving test early though, there's s 4 to 12 week queue for an appointment.

OP, congrats on getting your American driver's license. :)
