*sigh* Good Gawd, I was NOT trying to insult your intelligence or your education (rolls eyes). I am from the South. Sometimes I use expressive language that not a lot of people understand. Got it? Ever heard of Southern Sayings? Well, I use them. Even my husband looks at me sometimes with a blank look because he didn't get it either but he doesn't get offended. As to my definition...I will repeat myself again. No on one here has tried to control you in the literal sense. Did anyone tell you that you are not allowed or permitted to post this kind of stuff? Did anyone tell you that you would be banned from here for doing it? That's controlling. I am very familiar with controlling. Been there, and don't plan on going back. No, actually, I don't get it because now you're doing it again, even if it's accidental and you don't mean it. When you said above, "Well I don't have a PhD either. Surely you understand metaphors? Idioms and that sort of thing?", it looks sarcastic to me. Everyone who's been to high school in the US has painfully studied metaphors, idioms, similes, and the like, and you don't even have to go to school to be able to understand your "price of tea in China" remark. So explicitly explaining it, while at the same time pointing out someone's educational background, is condescending. And now your eye-rolling. From one of your other posts, it looked like you're a teacher. Do your students ever roll your eyes at you when you're trying to explain something? It's not exactly a sign of respect. If that's what you call "expressive language", you should be careful how you use it on a discussion board. I realize there is no intonation in writing in this way, so people often misinterpret another person's sarcasm, which would be obvious in spoken language. Anyway, I'm a teacher too, so I'm just trying to learn a lesson from what happened, and share that lesson with you. I appreciate your apology, and I'm dropping the issue because I really don't think you mean the disrespect that I read into your message.

But, before I say goodbye, one more lesson. You are correct that control in the literal sense was not used. No admins came on here and removed my posts or anything, or threatened banishment; that would have been ridiculous, obviously, considering this fuss is over something so small. Yes, that is very true. But that is an extraordinarily narrow interpretation of what control is. People can be controlled in a lot of ways, even by harsh language in the appropriate context, such as a discussion forum, even if it's not formally "fascist".

I don't want to open a can of worms now that the dust has basically settled, but feel the need to point something out.

On the issue of control, it may be that the admin (note, single admin as there is only one here with the power to pull posters into line, suspend, or remove accounts) did not police this thread, we all know that the group mentality prevalent on most corners of this board does a fairly good job of attempting to control the behaviors of others.

Please note I make no value judgment on the actual action of policing others, just pointing out that it happens at this level, not the admin.
