I suppose, you are in Texas. You might wanna check the rules in Texas. Your country must be in the qualifying countries in order to make that transfer. If not, then, get you a driver's license manual, take the test and since you already know how to drive, you might not need to enroll in a driving school. But I would recommend at least 2 driving lessons (road test) before you go to DPS to get your driver's license.

Driving in Pakistan might be definitely different from Texas.

Heck, out-of-state driver's don't like how we drive in Texas. If you live in Dallas, Houston or Austin then you shouldn't skip out on taking a road test.

Thanks for replies, I am coming to Virginia, I have driven vehicle in both UK and Pakistan. This is what I am wondering if I am going to be considered as a resident and cant use IDP then I am not going to waste time and money in getting IDP from Pakistan.

My UK license is still valid, and I have this feeling that It can be transferred but not sure if its going to work or not!

In Massachusetts you can drive with your country's license or foreign license. No restriction. Can you as long as you desire.

I've been driving on my Australian licence since February this year and can legally do so for 1 year in the state of Pennsylvania. If plan to use your Pakistani licence then you will need an international driving licence I would suggest you use the UK one. You can look up on line your states DMV and see what the requirements are in regards to this or call them once you arrive.

From Virginia's DMV website:

"Within 60 days of moving here, you must obtain a Virginia driver's license. However, if you hold a commercial driver's license (CDL), you must obtain a Virginia CDL within 30 days.

If you are age 19 or older and you hold a valid driver's license issued by a U.S. state or territory, a Canadian province, France or Germany, you may not be required to:

take the two-part knowledge exam or the road skills test

show proof of successful completion of a driver education course or hold a learner's permit for 60 days.

However, you must pass a vision screening test."
