First, i dont know why people question CBP or get kinda snarky with them.. when they ask a question you answer that with 'yes sir'

you should have known getting a 'girlfriend' to come visit you for 5 months was risky.. when he asked are you expecting anyone? you say 'yes' when he asks the name you say 'the name' then he asks is it your fiance you say 'girlfriend' how long have you been dating.. answer.. are you looking to get married 'not anytime soon'

you did not answer the question right, you were snarky and their is zero confidence she would return! but you answering 'fiance' sealed the deal!!! and it was pretty obvious 5months here she would not return..

but that is water under the bridge.. be thankful you can just apply for a K1 and get her here very quickly from her country!! some people wait YEARS!!! it will take 6 months.. and then you have 90 days to figure out if you want to go through with the marriage or not or send her back!

Also, it seems as though you were not really well up with the immigraiton laws! i think that is most peopls biggest downfall.. they dont know that what they are doing is technically 'illegal' and they dont understand the proper way to do soemthing until it is too late! hell, before VJ i had NO idea what a K1 was!!!

Answer yes sir? They are not God. I say be polite is enough.

Anyone on the K1 route would have a similar timeframe. Taking years is for other categories of visa types (I assume that is what you are talking about). Not really comparing like with like with that statement as OP is hardly looking to get married to a relative now is he!

I agree your comments on how he should have answered the questions as when I initially read his post I too thought exactly the same thing! Bit of common sense would have helped when answering a government official.

Everyone does quote the privelage not a right or allows you to knock at the door lines. We as non us citizens jump through these hoops to get visas when vwp won't meet an individuals requirements. Why go through all that to get knocked back at the last moment. Genuine people who have an expectation that having made concerted efforts, filled out forms, had background checks done etc were all for a reason.... To visit of course!

Whatever you say if on the day one officer is having a bad day it can turn really ugly very quickly.

I once witnessed an officer shout across the hall at JFK at a tourist who having completed the I-94 (the old days when they issued paper ones on flights to all non us citizens) for not signing it. They thought it had to be signed in front of the officer hence leaving it blank until they got to his desk. He then proceeded to bark at the next 2 people in line too also! The hall was packed, no word of a lie! The first experience of the US for many tourists entering for their holidays. Even American passengers were apologising from their queues and shaking heads. Just illustrating that the pressure can get to these individuals too.

i have crossed the border my entire life! i have been in secondary multiple times.. it has always worked out for the best:) i have had some funny, RIDICULOUS encounters with a young, ####### CBP! my friends and i of course stayed calm and answered the questions..never once talked back or blabbed on... after we bursted out laughing at how crazy the guy was!

i understand how hard and frustrating it is at the time, and i think maybe just crossing my entire life i understand how to approach these siutations and i kinda expect before hand to get pulled over and i prepare myself for questions that will be asked!

oh, and i do agree that most people are from other countries and they dont understand, their are language barriers.. a way a question is asked/answered in america is not how you would ask/answer it in another country! really, the culture of places plays a huge difference!!! and it is pretty obvious from here that people assume a visa approval means they get into america no questions asked.. their are many MANY misconceptions when it comes to immigration and that is the biggest issue out there!

it is usually not until someone has a problem that they seek out VJ... if everyone came here before they would be prepared and would not be in these situations

No, some people who get stuck in AP after applying for K1 sometimes wait years. Sometimes even spousal takes years.

Genuine people usually get in. It's the people who don't do their research first and come for the wrong reasons who get turned away. Tourist visa is for tourism, not for living with your boyfriend for almost 6 months.
