When downsizing, what did you pack? I have 4 boxes and I'm still not 100% sure what I am going to get rid of between now and then. All my photos and some of my clothes are already there. Is there anything you regret packing/shipping?

My hubby then fiancé shipped over 4 boxes before he came so I could get things ready. Mostly clothes and comics. He donated music and dvds because he knew they wouldn't work here because of regional coding. But overall he didn't regret what he took with him. Anything after a while of not needed we ended up donating at another time :)

I packed clothes, kitchenware, glassware, DVDs, books, gifts from my husband etc. I had like 8 moving boxes and four suitcases so I brought quite a lot. :)

You can get most things in America or on Amazon so if you miss packing something, I'm sure you'll find it here. :)

You can bring anything but no foods, rights?

I like my Asian foods so to cook them I need the spices. My sister in law has introduced me a good online indian spice store in US but there are some special kind of spices we use for cooking are missing. I am thinking how will I bring them with me. Any advice pls.

You can bring some food just remember to declare it. We always have som danish food with us because we like it :)

Just follow there guide and don't bring anything where it says you can't.

This is such a useful topic!

I live in London but have so much stuff!

What's the cheapest way to move my things from London to Maryland?

By boat ( I used Excess Baggage) - but make sure you chuck out most of your stuff first. I had a complete houseful and condensed it down to the two pallets . At least one of which is still in the garage. Every pound of stuff you ship will cost you UKP....

My focus was bringing stuff that was personal to me and couldn't be replaced over here. The only clothes I brought over were the stuff in the my two suitcases. Mind you I was moving from Watford to California.

You need to be really ruthless. If it's not valuable it's highly unlikely you won't be able to replace it here. Stuff like British foods aren't hard to find either locally (albeit more tricky in Farmsville USA) or online.

Thanks Richard.

I see what you mean.

I've had a look at Excess Baggage; they only do a 2 day express to the US so no slower cheaper option.

At this point it looks like a couple of flights is my best bet and I have to give away more stuff.

I just packed my clothes, some books and souvenirs. I was an expat living in the Bahamas before I moved here to the US. Most of my stuff I sold in a yard sale, a lot I gave away to friends too. I didn't ship anything. My then fiance went with me so we had extra baggage allowance.

I think I've posted this in a similar thread before, but here's what we did when we moved internationally.

We went through everything and asked ourselves:

– Can we ship this for less than it costs to replace?

– Does this have sentimental value, i.e., is it irreplaceable?

If no to both of those, into the donate/Craigslist pile it went.

If yes, we asked ourselves:

– Will we need this now, or can we bring over later?

Depending on that answer, we prioritized what to pack in our suitcases.
