DUE FOR GREEN CARD RENEWAL - QUESTIONS!

Good morning friends,

It has been some time since I've been on Visa Journey, so forgive me if I am asking a question that can be answered or found elsewhere.

My green card expires August 26 of this year. I was going to file form I-90, but I have also seen that form I-751 can be filed. Which is correct? I am filing because I need a new green card.

I realized this all after I posted stupidly - sorry, all... I am blonde! Thanks for your replies.

Now, the instructions for the affidavit from 2 people (for the I-751 form) do not say it needs to be notarized... but in your experience, did you get people to have their affidavits notarized?

A sworn affidavit is by definition notarized. Otherwise it is just a signed statement. However affidavits are considered such weak evidence that they are generally omitted. Good luck!

So just to confirm @cheezees, you are not required to include notarized statements - but that they are an OPTION to include as evidence? I would presume more is better, in terms of what you give USCIS as evidence... I saw the list of items they suggested as evidence and the statements were of the items -- I just presumed they were required.

No one piece of evidence is required. But in the grand scheme of things, affidavits are weak, weak, weak. No one is going to send in a negative affidavit not is your friend/parent/cousin saying that you live like a married couple evidence of anything other than hearsay. Financial comingling, proof of residence, and proof of joint liability is what we should focus on.

We didn't send any affidavits from friends, but we did send letters addressed to us both, and Christmas cards, with the envelopes showing the postmarked dates, from friends in the U.S. and from Netherlands. I thought that'd be stronger evidence, really, since the envelope has a postal service date/stamp.

Thanks all. We are still getting a statement from two people - more is more, right? At the very least, it shouldn't hurt our case. I was contemplating a couple photos - but we don't get photos taken too often as we are camera shy so not too sure or not.

Yes, I know there is an I-751 instructional guide, and yes I have looked at it... I am just curious to hear what others have done.

I have the package ready to send - woohoo! It's been a tough week for my family as we got some bad news about my mother's health...

Anyways, when you sent your I-751 package to your designated service center, I presume you sent it via USPS... or? Did anyone send it any other way?

I sent mine USPS Priority Mail - arrived on time with tracking

So I sent our package USPS priority and it arrived Sunday at USCIS' California lockbox. Does USCIS send any information (ie: a case number) to track online? I recall this is sort of how it worked back during the initial K-1 phase...

You'll get the NOA1 which will extend your green card for a year. Keep that letter but you cannot use that a receipt number to check your case online. When you get the biometrics letter you will use that receipt number to check your case status.
