My friend just moved back from there. She said it was great but "still in Texas." I guess it's not completely unTexasified.

There's a job opening there and at first I wasn't even thinking about leaving Cali because most of the jobs are here, but I heard that Austin is a really happenin' place and I'm tired of the high cost of living here.

How long have you lived there? How is the housing market? How culturally diverse is it? What's the weather like? How about the schools?

Thanks! :star:

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Austin is probably THE most diverse cities I've ever lived in. Grew up here, moved around, now back.

The people are cool.. everyone mixes well..race, culture, age, etc.

Housing is good - very affordable for markets this size in other parts of the country. Lots of rentals..lots of sales etc..

The best thing about Austin is it's diversity. I was born in Austin and have lived here for most of my adult life. The cost of living is considered relatively high, but not like New York or anything. If you're good with computers, getting a good job won't be an issue. The Spring time is cool and rainy, the summers are extremely hot and long, and the winters usually very mild and short. Don't know too much about the schools, however, as I don't have children yet. Austin has a very "happenin'" entertainment scene....especially when it comes to live music. It's a city that loves the environment and animals, and has a lot to offer in the way of family fun. But you can always find a jumpin' bar or club, if you'd prefer, any night of the week. There are beautiful parks and rivers, a small, yet gorgeous skyline, and genuinely kind people. The traffic is a different story

Anything else you'd like to know? PM me if you want, Tracy

There's no beach though, a bat brigde, but no beach :D

Austin may not have beaches, but there are beaches not too far away. And the bat bridge is cool. Really cool.

I bet you would like Austin, if you like everything about California except the price and the "layed back" rat race.

As has been said, Austin is very diverse and extremely "hip." (Probably hipper than most of Cali, in a lot of ways.) It's got a lot of Seattle influence, but it still has its Texas roots and oddball character. Its demos are very young, thanks to UT, and that influences the culture there so much. And the music scene is unmatched.

The summers would probably seem pretty hot but you'll get used to it  It's cooler than San Antonio -- freezes lightly maybe a couple of times in the winter. It's got its own character, different than any other Texas city -- very liberal, very progressive. It's centrally located, not too far from everything in Texas -- San Antonio is just over an hour away, Houston is about three hours, Dallas is maybe 3 and a half. The beach (Corpus Christi/Port Aransas) is also just 3 and a half hours away, so is Mexico. And Austinites enjoy the many nearby rivers and lakes just as much as the beach.

As has been mentioned, it's not cheap -- especially the housing. But if you can make good money (I mean for Austin) it's a pretty good place to live -- especially if you like a progressive, liberal, hip environment.

That's one thing I was thinking about. :P We have a place out here called 99 Ranch Market - it's quickly becoming Jinky's place to shop for food.

You've sold me on it! Just hope I'll land the job. :P
