Hi all,

I thought I'd remind people of the EU Referendum vote that is coming up in the UK next month (June 23rd). If you have been overseas for less than 15 years then you can register to vote as an overseas voter for the referendum. You can choose to vote by postal ballot or by proxy (i.e somebody voting on your behalf).

I believe the application for your postal votes has to be received by 16th May 2016 hence why I'm posting this right now :) [source]. The application for proxy vote is a little later.

You might find the following webpages useful if you are already living overseas and need to 'register to vote' and/or 'apply for a postal vote':

http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/register-to-vote/british-citizens-living-abroad

http://www.aboutmyvote.co.uk/frequently-asked-questions/overseas-voters

https://www.eureferendum.gov.uk/register-to-vote/

If you are not living overseas yet but will be come the time of the EU Referendum, then it wasn't immediately clear to me if you follow the above instructions. I fit into this category as I'm moving out in the next few weeks. I simply followed the 'temporary postal vote' instructions here: https://www.gov.uk/voting-when-abroad. I simply emailed the relevant form to the Electoral Services team for my local council in the UK who approved my postal vote with a US address. I'll think about updating the council at a later date. If you're moving out only a few days before the referendum then I'd suggest getting yourself a postal vote but having it sent to your UK address. You can then just fill your postal vote in and send it off before you leave.

Obviously, if anybody has any alternative views or thinks that I have stated something incorrect then I apologise!

I'm aware that there is no obligation to vote in the EU Referendum. This is purely a post for those that do want to vote in said referendum.

Simon.
