Hello,

I was hoping someone has gone through the process of bringing their parents residing in canada to the US. If so, do you know what type of police certificate to request? my parents went to the RCMP (royal canadian mounted police) and they had their fingerprints scanned which will take some time to process due to unexpected delays, however i heard about something called a CPIC check, which is a name and date of birth check and not requiring any fingerprints.

Am i getting this correctly or is the fingerprint check required? do they need the CPIC check? if so, where do they go for that?

Thanks,

I came from Canada on a K1 and didn't need the fingerprint check just the regular one. I got it at my local police station ?

Hold onto your hat its going to be a bumpy ride!!

but don't worry you'll get through it :luv:

Only if they've been convicted of a crime do they need the fingerprint check. Generally a good idea if you've been arrested as well. But just the CPIC name check is fine for most cases.

Digital fingerprint scan is very fast. I've received them within a week.

Physical ink and print takes a very long time since there is a backlog, don't do that one.

CPIC check is fine, unless your name is common and can wind up on a no fly list or something similar, but the NVC will/should flag it as a RFE item if they require more than a CPIC check.

I went ahead and got the certified background check regardless for the extra 20 or so dollars.

Yeah for some reason they were not able to get my dad's fingerprints digitally so they used ink and i'm hearing it takes months, I told them to go to the local police station and ask for a CPIC check using the name and date of birth and they were referred to the RCMP again for fingerprint scanning. Not exactly sure how I can be helpful from the states but oh well.

Thanks for the replies.

Does he have a previous conviction or arrest? If they are saying after doing the CPIC name check that he needs fingerprinting, that's likely the case. Even if something has been expunged etc from your record, if you've ever been convicted of a crime, you need the fingerprinting done. Then you also need the court records.

I don't understand the fingerprints taken requirement. The digital method will be enough the whole point is not to find any matching records, not provide them :)

I find that local police stations at the city/provincial level can screw up procedures for immigration visas since its out of the normal day to day activities of their departments. I would recommend getting a certified digital scan RCMP background check at a police station that knows what they are doing or via a background check company like commissionaires.
