I heard a story about a guy publicly urinating and they locked him up as a 'sex crimes offender'

he now has to register his whereabouts.

THIS I find ludicrous.

This is pretty much the reason I'm against the registry laws. They're going to result in too many false hits (public urination = indecent exposure, hope he didn't urinate on school property) and result in too little information to be useful. 'Sex offender' is a really broad brush.

Indeed - the moral panic whipped up in the UK by a certain tabloid newspaper certainly worked a treat.

If pedophilia is acknowledged as mental illness - it seems it should be treated as such.

Its the same debate - the outrage of the crime (which is clearly heinous) far outstrips its statistical likelihood of occurence, which is exaggerated by media over-reporting of certain types of crime.

Ironically enough - some of the people involved in the vigilante attacks actually had kids on the "at risk" register. I found that a little ironic - that they beat up a perceived bad guy to attone for their crappy parenting skills.

Yes - definitely. Care in the community was one of the Thatcher governments worst social policies. Shut down mental health hospitals and release the inmates into the community to be cared for and supervised by visiting 'social workers'. Resulted in a number of murders and assaults.

Molester Got Probation Just Days Before Slain 6-Year-Old Georgia Boy Vanished

BRUNSWICK, GA (AP) -- Three days before young Christopher Michael Barrios disappeared, a child molester suspected in the six-year-old's killing was sentenced to probation instead of prison for violating conditions of Georgia's sex offender registry.

The suspect, George David Edenfield, also never served prison time for his 1997 child molestation conviction after he struck a plea deal with prosecutors, according to a review of court records by The Associated Press.

Stephen Kelley, district attorney for the Brunswick Judicial Circuit, said today that it was not a breakdown in the system -- just a tragic situation. Still, Christopher's father and grandmother blamed the court system for not putting Edenfield in prison.

The 32-year-old Edenfield is one of four suspects arrested last week in connection with Christopher's abduction and slaying. The child's body was found Thursday stuffed in a trash bag dumped along a wooded roadside about three miles from his home. He had been missing for a week.

On March 5th, three days before Christopher vanished, Edenfield pleaded guilty in Superior Court to violating a state law that prohibits sex offenders from living within a thousand feet of schools, playgrounds or other places that draw children.

Court records show sheriffs' deputies told Edenfield in September that he had ten days to move from his previous home near downtown Brunswick, which sat too close to a playground. He was arrested October 9th after he failed comply.

After seeing this I wanted to give an update to my original post. Thanks to everyone for the helpful links. I shared the links with other concerned parents and they started making phone calls as well. Basically for this whole week, parents have been keeping their children at home and not sending them to school. Yesterday afternoon we received emails and phone calls telling us that we can be assured that "our children are safe at the school and could return today and that the alleged perputrater is in the authorities hands." I don't know the details (I'm going to try my best to find out though!), I just wanted to give everyone an update!

Exactly what we all thought. It's amazing what a load has been lifted off everyones shoulders.
