Flights out... single or return?

Hi all!

We are hoping to emigrate in September and have been looking into flight options London-Indianapolis.

So far all the airlines I've seen have charged a premium for single flights (like ££££) other than Norwegian Air, which does single flights as standard, and we could go to NYC, stay with a friend a few days then Amtrak from there (I like the idea of an adventure!)

Before I book- am I right in thinking it wouldn't look good for us to get return flights and just not use the return portions? The only reason we would think of doing this is because it would mean we could take our cat ourselves (Norwegian Air doesn't fly pets) instead of having to arrange for someone else to bring him out.

Interested to know if anyone bought returns when emigrating then just didn't use them, or if this is a definite no-on?

Thanks in advance!

Thank you... do immigration the other end not view it a bit suspicious if you have a return ticket but are meant to be emigrating, or do they not look?

Also, if they book a return to visit England again do they just keep doing the same thing to fly back out? I guess...?

Stuff to look into!

most people do a return and then either cancel the return or book it far out and then use it if they are going home (When they have AP or GC)

I don't know what people do if they use it ... :) It's so different what people do. But there is nothing wrong with it and you'll have no trouble having a return flight when you enter.

OK cool, will weigh it up... cost of 3 x returns with cat verses, 3 x singles and Amtrak without cat and cat flying on own or with visiting friend... I may need a spreadsheet for this ;)

Thanks!

I often find our flight via momondo and I was actually able to find a one way the same price as a return. I can't book yet of course since I don't have my visa in hand but I'm still looking at the prices for us to go over there.

I also depends on what day, a week day is more cheap then the weekend (At least the way we are flying) and we are also bringing a dog :)

Book return flights on the best route for you, the cat, and your pocketbook. CBP is not interested in your tickets or reservations. Cancel the returns and forget about them. You saved money. Trying to plan when you might use three returns legs is senseless. Then you are back in the UK faced with the same situation trying to plan another backward itinerary.

Just a word of advice having worked for one of the airlines you are probably pricing up for many years...

It is officially considered a breach of contract but consequences are rarely followed through. There are things you should do to avoid that. I'd rather not discuss in an open forum as I still work in the industry so please PM if you need further information.

Timeline in brief:

Married: September 27, 2014

I-130 filed: February 5, 2016

NOA1: February 8, 2016 Nebraska

NOA2: July 21, 2016

Interview: December 6, 2016 London

POE: December 19, 2016 Las Vegas

N-400 filed: September 30, 2019

Interview: March 22, 2021 Seattle

Oath: March 22, 2021 COVID-style same-day oath

Now a US citizen!

At the moment it's looking like being a similar price if we go:

a) 3 x single tickets to NYC, Amtrak to Indianapolis, and return ticket for family/friend to bring our cat out and visit us at the same time

(This way we get a mini-holiday staying with a friend in New York, a train adventure, and to see a UK friend/family member in our new home, but the downside is that it's quite a bit more to organise)

or

b) 3 x return tickets to Indianapolis, we bring the cat ourselves and cancel the returns...

(which doesn't have the benefits above, but is a lot simpler...)

So it's really weighing up those options!

Interested to hear what others would do in our situ :)

I will message you, JFH, as would be great to have that info to consider...

Thanks!
