Contractless Cell Phone Plans

My fiancée has been using Red Pocket on a $35 monthly plan since she returned to the US in September, but they're unreliable and have terrible customer service. We both have iPhones we own outright and are wary about being locked into a contract - back in the UK we were on GiffGaff or Lebara, if that gives anyone an idea of the sort of thing I mean.

Now that I've arrived in the US I'm shopping around to get us something reliable and good value, and wondered if any VJers had recommendations!

My husband bought the go-phone he wanted from Wal-Mart, and then got it all set up through AT&T. Set up the bill online through our bank account and there's a slight discount ($40 instead of $45). Unlimited talk and txt. To use your UK phone with a US provider though, you'd need to get the UK company to unlock it. Generally txts to 100 countries are also free unlimited, but unfortunately the UK is not one of them. So if you want to talk to people back home use a Skype app or you'll have to add on an international plan (which despite the concept still doesn't give you a 100% free call).

The big three are going to be ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

Try Cricket, Simple mobile, T-Mobile, ATT go phone. Most major carriers don't have contracts so you can check

my wife uses T-Mobile for her monthly plan that she has. we got the to use for her GSM phone that she could use in the Philippines.it is simple prepaid plan that you can call internationally with

I have been using Metro PCS for a couple of years now, $40 dollars flat rate, unlimited Call,text and 4gb of Highspeed data.

I added $5 to ahve unlimited international texting to any cellphone number around the world.

BTW - Tmobile owns Metro PCS, so they are on the same network.

We have T-Mobile, no contract, and very reliable. We paid roughly $33 every month. We got it at Walmart.

We have T-mobile. They have no problem with bringing your own phone. Get it unlocked. They were the first major to simplify the no contract thing, but I also think the others have followed the same business model. You might want to go in local provider's stores and talk to a human about plans. Sometimes the websites post their "suggested" entry level, but they actually have other plans.

I used Giffgaff back in England. They're awesome! My husband and I both use straight talk. They're good and reliable. Just pop in the sim card and you're off. No contract, no worries as long as your phone is unlocked. I've always had unlocked. Flexibility is key for me ?

These are all great suggestions, thank you everyone! I've been going through them systematically. Something that I forgot to mention is that my fiancée's is a CDMA phone, meaning that it doesn't come with a SIM card. This has narrowed things down a little but it looks like Ting or Credo are still doable, at least until she can buy a new one.

I use T-Mobile's $30 prepaid plan (I intensely dislike contracts).

100 minutes, unlimited texts, and 5GB of 4G data per month. And if you need to make more than 100 minutes of calls you can simply use Google Hangouts to make them to (and receive them from) normal phone numbers for free in the US and Canada.

I think it's the best value plan out there right now that comes with this much 4G.

I have the exact same plan and really happy with it. Plus if you order the sim online, there's little to no cost for the sim.

We use Straight Talk. They have plans for different companies like t-mobile and at&t. I also buy it always for one month when i go on vacation and have no problems with my german phone.
