Hi. I am in US now for almost 2 weeks. I'm curious on getting SSN. Do I need to get now or after marriage? Cause we are planning to get after wedding so my name on the card is with my new surname already. But I read here that some already filed before marriage. I'm a little confused now.

You can file before, but you will have to change your name on your SSN once you get married, if you decide to take your spouses last name. I did it before I got married because I did not change my last name. Some say it is quicker to get it done before you get married and then change your name afterwards.. It all depends in how much of a hurry you are to get your SSN (and pure luck) :)

I think it's easier to get it before you are married and then go into the office with your marriage certificate after you are married to get the name changed. That's what we did and it was really easy. I think if you do it after marriage it is a lot harder as your name is different on the I-94 to your married name and your status has changed so they sometimes ask for your EAD or green card to prove immigration.

I got mine before we got married and It took me 2 months to finally receive the card because they don't know how to mail things apparently. We wen't back ASAP after the wedding to change my name. Just note that If you're getting married to close to the 90 day mark, they wont let you change your name. You have to have that all done 2 weeks before the 90 day mark if you choose to.

I'd go now so you can get the ball rolling in my opinion if you want your SSN before your EAD.

Thank you for all your response. I'm doing the form now. Are they only ask the I-94 and passport as a requirement?

Hi,

I applied SSN 3 days after I arrived in US. They will be needing your passport and i-94 ( and just bring a photocopy of your BC if ever the SSA staff ask for it.)
