Hi guys,

I have recently arrived in the USA, married & I've just done bio metrics for EAD & AOS.

I expect my card in the mail as per processing times around the 8th of June 2016 for my EAD and would like to get working right away but can not do so with out a SSN.

My question is this:

1 - Can I work with only a EAD and no SSN?

2 - How do I go about getting my SSN when the requirements state that I need either a Green Card / EAD / i94?

I was not given an I94 as before so I do not have one.

I am waiting on my GC

I am waiting on my EAD.

Does this mean that I need to wait for my EAD to arrive before I can get a SSN?

Thank you so much for your help in this regard. This is a very confusing process and all I want to do is start working and make an income as soon as possible to support my family!

you cannot work until you have your EAD.

once you have your EAD, get a job, take your offer letter to the SSA office (and whatever else they ask for), fill out a form and your social security card will be mailed to you.

you can start working once u submit the SSA application but they may wait on payroll till u get your SS card.

once you get your green card, update SSA that you are now a permanent resident and they will issue you a new card without any work expiration date.

congratulations.

Thank you so much for your quick reply.

I know that I can not work until I get a EAD (which of ourse I will wait for).

What I am trying to speed up is the SSN so I wont have to wait to be paid so I can support my family.

Am I understanding correctly that there is nothing that I can do in the meantime while I wait for my EAD to get my SSN?

You should have printed out your I-94 and gone to get your SSN when you first arrived. Your entry was on 2-14, so you just might still be able to get it now. Its very close so print out the i-94 and go apply at a SSA office tomorrow, or today if you still can. If you miss this, you'll have to wait until the EAD is in hand.

Thank you for the quick reply.

This answers my question.

Sorry, pressed send before I could edit EAD is your ability to get your SSN.

We got a SSN immediately after getting married prior to filing for AoS/EAD/AP.

It clearly states that it requires DHS authorization for Work.

But dont see why OP cant go get her SSN now. Unless her i94 is invalided/expired.

Its clear in the guides some ppl get SSN before marriage and then have to hassle if they do name change in the numerous SSN/name change posts.

We just bought Marriage lic/cert and I94...etc. The wait was not too bad and the gal at the counter was rather pleasant.

Getting SSN was first thing I focused on as easier to get added to accounts, cards, spouse/employee benefits...etc.

**OP -- Strangely your timeline says you received an EAD stamp on your POE?

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS LINK!!!

My i94 is still valid and I will use this tomorrow to get my SSN.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This means that when I start working when I get my EAD & I can be paid at the end of that pay period instead of waiting for a SSN to go on the payroll.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR INFORMATION!!!!

Anyone on this thread please note that:

You CAN get a SSN BEFORE you receive your EAD provided you have a valid i94 which can be printed at https://i94.cbp.dhs....94/consent.html

If your i94 is NOT vaild you must wait for the EAD (which should come before your green card)

If you have NOT applied for the EAD using form i765 then you must wait for your green card to arrive.

Why was I so concerned with this?

Your SSN is attached to payments made for taxes, receiving benefits etc as seen with Social Security.

You can not work without a SSN since this number is used to attach to your tax returns etc & is automatically captured by your workplace then reflected on your W2

Thank you all for your responses!

I truly appreciate your time & information!!!
