USVI travel on I485 (updated info needed)

Hi Guys,

I have a meeting in Saint Thomas next week, however reading on here it has me worried. I have been in the US for 5 years under a L1A visa, we got married in October and are now pending my Green Card. My L1A visa has expired in the process, is it enough to travel to USVI on a valid passport and I-485 alone?

Only answers I'm seeing are fairly old at this time, is there any new travelers who have done this ?

I485 is an application for adjustment of status, not a travel document.

Do you have AP? Leaving the country without it would void your AOS process.

Well we are not leaving the US, I'm currently in the Houston going to the US Virgin Islands and no we are not going to the BVI for that reason.

Will you at any point need to go through a border checkpoint (sorry I don't know the specifics of your route of travel).

If no, then keep your NOA1 for the application and your marriage certificate with you along with DL and/or passport for identification.

If yes, you'll have an issue without AP.

Its from my understanding that you do go through a checkpoint leaving the USVI going back in the airport for US Mainland, to verify status. I spoke to the CBP in the US Virgin Islands and he informed that it should be ok, however I'm not sure how I should take that answer.

I would take that statement with a bucket of salt.

My interpretation of that information is that you (not being a USC or LPR as of yet, nor having a US visa with validity) will be in trouble and might be denied re-entry and void your ongoing AOS.

If anyone has other information, please share. Personally, I would advise to proceed with caution.
