I don't exactly know what the person is complaining about. If it's the ability to not be able to stay up later to watch, there's an amazing invention called DVR. My sister DVRs hours of tv a week and then catches up on the weekends without the ads. When there's nothing on during the summer, she catches up with Netflix. Other than that, the real problem is excessive ad breaks, which for the half-hour comedies these days tend to shorten the runtime of shows and largely depress the funny factor. I personally like longer format shows, but the reason they run so long isn't merely the run time or filler in place of poor script, it's the ads.

I think, as a critic , he is lamenting the lack of editing with many shows.... A long episode does not necessarily make it great. There is too much hyperbole and not enough succinctness ...it is evident in a lot of writing these days. But if they can make the show longer perhaps they can get more advertising ( more money for the company producing the show). Very few well written shows are aired these days imo.

Well, he uses Fargo as an example, citing that the show runs nearly as long as the movie. Personally I like that. It is and continues to be a fantastic show, had it been edited down would have ruined the quality. FX/FXX has quite a few long running good shows these days, but they seem even longer by the numerous ad breaks. I tend to think it's the ads that ruin the pace of a show and drag things out. I like the UK method of limited but longer ad breaks on some stations.

Uggh. I can't stand the current uk method..all though it does give one time to make a pot of tea during the show. It breaks up the continuity...and weakens powers of concentration .

Each series is stand alone with some interconnectivity, set in the same universe but not the same story as the film. It's very much in their style and pacing. All the quirky things from their movies, and larger social/philosophical commentary are there too. Season 1 probably had the best performance from BB Thornton in a long time, season 2 had some standout performances from a lot of newcomers. Directors are always going to have a lot of self-indulgence, but a film or tv show won't be for everyone. There are a lot of movies that could stand with editing, but hubby and I have always liked long tv shows with limited breaks.
