Not sure if I'm in the right section but got to start somewhere i guess.

Hi, I live in the UK with my family (Wife and 5 yr old daughter) and we would love to work/live int he US. The process appears very rough and we obviously want to the best chance possible.

I was born in UK and hold UK passport. Im educated to college (FE) level (No degree...yet) Im a teaching assistant for young man with cerebral palsy. (7years)

My wife is a secondary school English teacher and head of year with degree and a master in education. She was born in the UK but hold a duel nationality passport as her father was born in Dublin. (Only her dad) Her mum was born her in UK with Irish parents. Therefore wifes grandparent on both sides are Irish.

5 Year old daughter (school)

As I understand it the UK is not eligible for the DV Lottery.

Any advice is very much appreciated.

Thank you

You can read here to see if there are a way for you.

https://www.uscis.gov/greencard

And your wife could look into seeing if there is a way for her to get a teacher job and get work permit that way since she has a lot of education behind her. (Don't know if it will be enough but she can always try and look into it)

Then there is, unfortunately, very little chance that you will be able to emigrate.

your wife stands the better chance because of her education but even then it's very slim.

Why do you want to live and work there? It sounds like you have good and rewarding jobs in the UK already. Sounds like you are very settled.

I'll check the links out thanks very much.

Yes we work and live in the UK we have lots of family in the US (Not immediate family though) and the weather and quality of life is better there. We want a better life for us and especially our daughter. I never said the jobs we did were enjoyed by us ha ha. (I enjoy mine but my wife, not so much)

Family? if immeduate family that may be a chance.

Weather? I was thinking you would say that. I'd never move anywhere based on the weather. Economic stability, cost of healthcare, access to education and social services, the political climate maybe but not weather. To each their own. And with Florida sun comes hurricanes...

But seriously, being realistic now.. Chances are very slim. Don't get your hopes up. But enjoy your holidays with your family there.

We all have our individual reason. Is quality of life no enough? Unfortunately it not immediate family like parents etc. It's Aunts & Uncles which don't qualify :(

Your wife can apply for the DV lottery I believe, as she holds an Irish passport- I have friends who lived in the UK and applied there, but they were born in Ireland, just moved as kids. If she gets it, you as her legal spouse and any minor children can go with her. The next one will open in October this year sometime.

I do not think your wife will get a work visa as a teacher, unless she specialises. What about you, what will your degree be in? Do you enjoy your work with the disabled young man? There is a shortage of therapists here (speech, OT, PT), so that may be a way, or your wife specialising in special needs education.

Have you considered Canada? Weather isn't as great, but maybe you like snow. Summers can still be excellent. It operates a points based system, so you might be eligible.

Looking for better weather and teaching jobs? If you already had a path to the United States I would recommend Hawaii as they are desperate for teachers, but unfortunately they do not have their own immigration system...

Quality of life is relative. Before jumping on conclusions think about how much you could possibly make in your profession, think about healthcare costs and your daughter education costs. There are millions of people here that have quality of life significantly worse than most people in UK.

It's very difficult to judge the standard of living in a place that you have only been to on holiday, even if you do have "distant relatives" there. Unless they are working the same job, on the same salary and have the same outgoings as you, you can't know what it's like. Just because Uncle Bob has a bigger house than yours in the UK or a more expensive car or can eat out more often, doesn't mean your life will be the same.

I will be taking a pay cut when I move. But I'm not moving for money, weather or material things. I'm moving to my husband. My husband's standard of living is much lower than mine, in terms of material things.

And don't get me started on the possibility that the country could soon be run by Donald Trump.
