Nope...you can use it forever :) Stewart had one from his J-1 visa and just used it again for the visa proceedings...when he got his new card it had the same number :)

Good stuff.

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

I heard from one person whose wife was from Russia and originally was on a J-1.....then went back to serve her 2 year HRR......and when she re-entered with the green card, she had to apply to "lift the conditions/restrictions on the j-1" with the Social Security administration.

Seems to make sense to me that you will have to do that, because as you know, even though you have a ss# already, you are limited to where you can actually work. So, you may have to do the same, once you get your green card.

P.s.......nice picture. I feel like I'm watching a 60'' big screen TV, looking at that thing ;)

The person I am referring to.......was very knowledgeable about the J-1 process, as it relates to marriage. I learned quite a bit from him, and take his advice as solid. Below, is what he wrote to me long ago. With my own wife, having a J-1 as well......much like you..........his experience in this.....was most valuable.

Below, is an excerpt of what he wrote...

What happened with my Wife's SS number was, we went to the local SS

administration with her Visa which was stamped at Immigration when she

came through Atlanta.... showed them her old card which said she could

only work with permission....showed them her Visa was granted and they

sent her new card in less than a week, just like yours and mine. It's not

like some difficult thing to remove, it's just some rule they must have

as a "student" ... they didn't give us any problems or anything... just

that the woman there didn't know how to change the "code" in the

computer, but her supervisor figured it out...It really is nothing more than changing the "code"

in her file on the computer....nothing major.

There's more........but too personal to post online. I appreciated his experience with these matters............it was helpful and invaluable.

So, you have more hurdles to cross, ....but as you say......it shouldn't be too much trouble or burden for you. Just a few more hoops for you to jump through. ;)

I have my SSN from my J1 visa. Most J1 visas do not have a 2 year requirement, I didn't have it!!! As fas as I know medical personnel has the requirement. But kinzazaa, you can see that on your DS 2019. If the box with the 2year requirement is checked, then you have to stay 2 years in Moldova before you can reenter the US with a K1/K3 visa. If you served the two years in your country there is NO NEED for a waiver, since you fulfilled the two year requirement!!! If you want to go back to the US earlier, you can apply for a waiver which is mostly granted in marriage related cases.

I could use my SSN without any problems. I just got a new card with my married name and no DHS print on it.

Aaah, I was wondering myself.

I also have a SS card that I got on J1 visa 3 years ago and besides my name and number, it also states "valid for work with DHS authorization only". So I suppose when I apply for a new card with my married name on, the DHS restriction will no longer apply to me as a person adjusting status from K1.

Thanks for the info, MPGGPM!

The SSN card will only be free of that DHS sentence if you go and apply for a new card AFTER you have the green card. The SSO doesn't accept the NOA letters as proof of legal residency - only the GC or the welcome to America letter is accepted as proof of permanent residency. If you go with your K1 or EAD the card will still state "valid for work with DHS blablbalbla". But nobody really cares about it - it is only important that the ex-J1's are lucky and already have a SSN which makes it one trip less after arriving in the US! :)

Thank you, Anna, that totally makes sense. If it didn't have the DHS sentence, then we wouldn't need an EAD and such for legal work...

I'll just get a new card with my lovely married name
