I am not at that stage yet but can you tell me how you fixed the appointment for biometric and medicals in chennai

Both can be done online. Once the embassy send you the file, go through it well. It will also contain information on how to go on to the mumbai or delhi consulate website (depending on which you get) and has directions to pay the fee and choose one of the available date. Dont worry about it for now. you can start doing it once the file reaches you. Also, you can either call the chennai Apollo or one near your wife's city and book an appointment over the phone for the medicals. I fixed my medical appointment on their website.

For both appointments you will need a reference number that the embassy will send to you.

you have to set the appointment. the moment you get their package, go to the embassy site and fix the date that is convenient to you. dates fill up really fast.

How many months is the visa valid for cr1

CR-1 is valid for two years and then you have to file to remove the conditions on the visa.

From the US Dept of State's website:

"If you have been married for less than two years when your foreign citizen spouse enters the United States on an immigrant visa, his or her permanent resident status is considered “conditional.” The immigrant visa is a conditional resident (CR) visa, not an immediate relative (IR) visa.

You and your spouse must apply together to USCIS to remove the conditional status within the ninety days before the two-year anniversary of your spouse’s entry into the United States on his or her immigrant visa. The two-year anniversary date of entry is the date of expiration on the alien registration card (green card). See Remove Conditions on Permanent Residence Based on Marriage on the USCIS website."

The medical appointment and biometrics appointment have to set up by you. But you cannot do that until you have an interview letter. The visa interview's date and time is set by the consulate. Once you get your letter, then you make your own arrangements for the medical exam and biometrics appointment.
