Hello,

I received the news today that I have received a SSN - finally! My I-94 expires May 7th and I really want to get a drivers license so I can get around. My SSN card should be coming in the mail sometime next week and that leaves me with approx 8 days until May 7th. I'm planning on taking the written test right away, but as I don't think I'll be able to also do the driving test within the 7th, is it possible for me to take the driving test once my I-94 is expired or would I have to wait until my green card is produced? We've tried reading up on it and apparently an EAD is also valid to take a drivers license (as proof of residence) anyone that has tried it that way?

The requirements for getting a driver's license are different for every state. In many states, the driver's license you can get based on your I-94 will expire when your I-94 does, and you won't be able to get a driver's license again until you get an EAD. In some states, you might be able to get one on your I-485 receipt notice. It all depends on the state.

Most states require something to prove legal presence and you would need your EAD for this. Checkyour state's DMV website.
