Good day to everyone,

So me and my fiance decided to bring our lovely pet with me when I get to U.S., currently we are still on the process of our K-1 visa.

I am hoping that somebody here who knows and/or experienced travelling with their pet from Philippines to United States.

What are the requirements, step by step guide, airline guidelines, is there immigration guidelines and vaccines needed?

I hope you could share some information or links? Thank you in advance, I appreciate it.

Your dog must be vaccinated for rabies at least 30 days before traveling. It also will need to be vet checked for screw worm 1 week before traveling. The Philippines is on the list of countries that need this check. Bring this paperwork with you when you bring your pet to the USA. That is the extent of what the USA is going to want on your dog when you bring it. Next is totally dependent on the airlines you chose. You'll need to look at what they require for that information.

Cats do not require rabies vaccination. All other pet types, are going to be rather difficult.

Hi guys!

Its been a while since I visited this website. Just wanted to update my experience when I came here in US with my dog.

First off, I gathered all the documents needed to present at the Bureau of Animal Industry in Quezon City. This is the place where you get the most important document for your lovely pet to go through past the Airlines, the Export Permit. I have to tell you all that this place is quite far from Manila (I was staying in Manila at that time) and you have to have all the certificate and documents needed.

Here are the documents needed to get Export Permit:

Vaccine Record

Transport Permit from local BAI (if you live in the province)

Recent Health Certificate comming from a Veterinarian (this is to certify that your pet is free of screw worm and is able to fly) this expires 3-10 days so make a plan ahead of time.

That is all about it. Make sure all the vacinnation is up to date especially the anti-rabies vaccine, parvo, bakuna, etc. It should be dated and signed by your Vet with his/her license number. I have to warn you that the woman at the BAI Quezon City Office is very strict. She will not issue the Export Permit if you dont have all the requirements. I understand why because they are just following rules and they dont want to be questioned in the near future. They just want to make sure.

Once they are satisfied with the documents you presented they will issue the Export Permit and you and your pet is now worry free. Also make sure everything is correctly spelled.

The Export Permit is all you need to present to Airlines when you board the plane as far as from my experience. And also, as a precaution make sure the other documents (vaccine record and the vet health certificate) are ready as well.

NOTE: Guys, dont listen to other people keep on saying that you should do this test and this, you cant take him with you, and all that. Because it will just worry you even more. A smart thing to do is Do your homework, check what are the necessary documents needed for every airlines that you are flying with, also check what are the requirements test to do in every country and double check everything. Some Vet doesnt know the documents needed as well so its all up to you. From my experience this is all it.

Thank you all for your help and God bless!

Hi! I'm from the Philippines as well. Just wanted to ask about the breed of your dog and where did he stay during the flight. I have a pet that I'm planning to bring to US also. He's a 4 year old Golden Retriever. I'm worried cause I've seen lots of article about large dogs being transferred to another country by putting them in crate inside the plane cargo and I'm just afraid he might be neglected the whole flight and might not make it. ? If you had your dog with you in the cabin during your flight, do you have any suggestions if there are any pet relocations that will safely transport my dog in the US? I'm also considering that for the safety of my pet. :( Thanks! Edited by JAMSantos

Animals in the cabin must be placed in a carrier that fits in your under seat space. This will not be happening with a retriever. Larger ones will be in a carrier that is placed in a bottom area. Yes the animal will be alone during the trip. You may want to hire a animal shipping company.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Hi Jam! First of all sorry for the late response. Been kindof busy these days.

So, my dog is a mix japanese spitz/shitzu. She weigh 7kg. During our flight she was in the cargo plane same plane where I flew. There is no other way that my dog will be able to be in the cabin because she is more than the size recommended by the airlines.

In your case your dog should be in the cargo plane because of the size. My suggestion before you book a plane ticket You should look up through the airline website about the dog policy and gather all the documents they require. Then you have to call them to book your plane ticket and let them know that you are flying with your dog. Make sure to ask if the plane is well ventilated. And also dont forget to get the export permit from the BAI thats the most important document.

Thats all about it.

If you have other question just let me know.

I visited the US last year by car with my cat and the rabies vaccine was in fact required. Perhaps it has changed since then, or perhaps there is some confusion amongst the border patrol as to what they are looking for, I am not sure.

I brought my kitten from Indonesia in January 2016 and was not required to show rabies - although I had it just in case. In fact - they didn't even look at her when I was going through security in the US. =(

Hi fruitcake,

Hope all is well. My fiancée is planning to bring her dog in the US as well. I have several questions if you don't mind responding. We have been looking at the requirements to bring a dog in the US and one particular test specifies that we need a screwworm test done, is there a particular procedure that needs to be performed to the dog for the "test" to be fulfilled? We have searched online and can't find any specifics on this. Also, did you fly Philippine Airlines? If so, did you have to pay the cargo fee for the dog at the time of check in? Did U.S. customs check all the documents the said they would need upon your POE?

Hello Vince, i am glad to help.

Yes, your fiancee's dog must have this screwworm test, its a bloodtest. This is a certification given by her vet. It expires 3 days. This is just one of the requirements needed to show to the BAI. You can find specific information on my post please read.

Yes, I flew with Philippine Airlines. I paid the cargo fees for my dog upon check in.

Yes, the US customs check all my documents.

Hope everything will be smooth with your fiancee. Have a nice day!

Hi,

I am planning to bring my dog too and our flight is going to be on April. I'll be booking a flight to PAL because they dont have any breed restriction since I have a Lhasa Apso. I just want to ask if you had any stop over and how did you check your pet in?

Hi Jing! Im glad to help.

From Manila to LA i didnt had stop over. Its direct flight, I believe it was 13 hours flight. Me and my pet flew in the same plane but my dog is in the cargo coz shes little bigger than the required size to be check-in in the cabin.

Have a safe flight and good luck!

Thanks for all the info in this thread.

Did you breeze through US customs? Was your dog snub-nosed? Mine is a pug/min-pin mix so she has like half a snub. I'm planning on bringing her to the US the next time I go back home for a visit.
